As far as mid control, the 4 band Audere is great. I've got it in 3 basses, and I'm usually all about diversity as far as aftermarket equipmentUnfortunately not!
It sounds... it's a little hard to describe. The 'neck' pickup alone is a bit Precision like but less fat and sharper. Both pickups together have a very pronounced midrange 'honk' that I was not aiming for. Sometimes I've experimented with pickup positions, but usually just one pickup, not two. I though maybe it'll have some degree of 'Stingrayness' but with the coils farther apart... I could not predict the result. I went for it anyway before testing, as I could just revert to "Jazz" configuration by putting back the other scratchplate in 5 minutes. It is not a bad sound, but the mid 'honk' needs taming a bit. I roll off the passive tone control and we're in growly funk territory easily. I want to put a 3-band preamp on it to adjust the sound better, but I haven't yet decided which one. I also want to try wiring the coils in series, that might bring the low midrange up and balance the sound a bit better... but who knows?
The pickups are DiMarzio Area J.
