Here's one for you - Schecter Custom Shop Jazz.
They cost $2000 new, but used ones sell for $800 - $1000.
They are built better than a Fender CS, but sound closer to a Sadowsky.
There is one on eBay right now for $1000.

Hey guys, im thinking about upgradeing my bass and im thinking about getting a jazz bass I want to spend about 1000-1500 CDN on a bass. im up for any suggestions that have the jazz body style so fender, valenti stuff like that.

imo, if you want to get into the jazz bass, you should start with a real one. a passive fender jazz bass. get a mexican one to see if you like it. you may not. the mexican jazzes are inexpensive but you'll be almost there as far as sound, feel and construction go. if you like it, then you may want to up-grade to an american series or higher. fender makes 648 different jazz basses so i'm sure there will be one to fit your needs. peace, jeff

mexies are alll hti and miss too, ive played some mexican j-basses that smoke the americans hanging next to them at the store...so the best thing(unless you order a valenti) would be to go out and play as many models as you can...i wouldnt recomend buying a fender bass without playing ti first, just dont find that there is consistant quality control in their instruments...
