If you find a bass you like then ask the salesperson if they mind you switching the strings for you to try it. They shouldn't have a problem with that.
yeah, I got to say, I wouldn't expect to be asking this in any of the shops round here, but maybe I'm just being timid
hello gang
I'm GASsing bad for a Jazz, please spray some wisdom on me...
I play busy fingerstyle funk, badly. Main bass is a EBMM 4 H, and I'm looking for a great bass to play on the more old fashioned parts of our set.
Check out the new Sire Marcus Miller V7, here's a pix of mine.http://www.talkbass.com/attachments/628825/
So - I tried a load of them out today
Pre owned MIM 70s (block inlays etc). Poor condition but cheap at £450 and played nicely
new MIM std. Played slick as anything, sound was ordinary, £600
new MIA, black, maple. Played heavy, hard work, sounded great £1200
new MIA white, RW, tort pickguard. played great, sounded great £1200
So I nearly went for the MIA white, and then I'm thinking, what about used, what about other models?
£1200 is a lot for me and I'd like to save if I can.
First conclusion: there's a LOT of variation and I can't buy without trying - comments please? should I simply reckon on having to get a setup on anything I buy without trying, or is this not enough to even out the differences, and I should insist on try before buy?
I really really liked colours on the white/tort, but there don't seem to be a lot of these around used...
Must be passive - discuss
Must be MIA - discuss. I want to own a collectible classic - am I missing out?
Other older models that seem to be around
- MIA vintage 70s, go for around £1000-1200 used - any good? I don't want the original pickup and bridge guards, won't they just get right in the way?
- MIA special - any good? what is a Greasebucket tone circuit?
- what is a Highway One?
- maple or RW - discuss?
What's the deal with the pickups? AIUI the MIA std moved to Custom Shop pups in 2012 - what does this mean for
Anyone in UK fancy selling me a used MIA with white/tort?
Loads of questions, any answers to any of them would be greatly appreciated.
thanks! (be gentle with me)

Finger style funk like Prestia or Porter?! Nothing sits in the mix like a Precision. Also avail in white/tort!
Sure. If the OP uses flats then it makes perfect sense to me that he would want to hear a bass that he likes with flats on it. I wouldn't expect the salesperson to switch the strings for me but I would expect the salesperson to let me change them for a test drive. As long as you are upfront with the salesperson I don't see why this would be an unreasonable request at any decent music store.Seriously?
Where do you live? I'm moving there.![]()
Glad you got something you're happy with. And don't mind the Precision-heads; contrary to what some of them would have you believe, a P-free life can be just dandy.Haha, I did it!
I've ended up with a new MIA Jazz Std, Mystic Red, maple.
I tried a 2010 used and a different new, and the one I've gone with plays way better. All three sounded good, not much to separate them, but this one was much faster and smoother. So there we are! Thanks for the help guys, I'll put up a picture later...
And even better, it was on special offer as it's a discontinued colour![]()

If the neck on a bass moves enough to make it uncomfortable to play in the time is takes to change strings then you might not want to buy that bass anyway. Not unreasonable. And some places would gladly take you for a free set of strings. But I've never thrown a set of flats on a bass where the truss rod didn't need an adjustment (due to the higher tendion of most flats) to get the action back into a comfortable playing range if it were strung with rounds first. Especially the light guages most new basses come with these days. And a knowledgeable music salesman would know that.
