I just completed the task of shielding the cavity of my bass guitar. I have JP-90 model with Jazz and Precision Pickups. I had just completed installing Seymour Duncan Quarter pounders for the Precision and the Jazz Bridge Pickups.
Suddenly, I had the Fizz Buzz sound, so I followed your recipe for the foil and grounding procedure, installed new pots and .0475 Cap, now I have the exact sound I was looking for with Deep bass on Precision and up front Bass on the JAZZ but the combination is awesome.

Thank you for showing the way. My family thought I was going crazy doing this kind of intense work to a guitar. But the results are awesome. It was really a decent project, and the time was well spent for the outcome

I'de also like to start by saying Big thanks to Lyle for starting this thread! I have read through the numerous pages of this thing and I don't think it's been adressed---My apologies if it has.
I recently purchased a MIM Jazz. I'm replaceing the pups with Dimarzio 123's and switching out the bridge with a BAII. So this thread was a Bass God send.
My question(s) is the bass currently has a black anodized pickguard and a control plate that has been painted black. I don't really dig the way the two textures of black look so I ordered a custom one piece PG that has a conecting control plate Invalid Link Removed (also black anodized). 1. Does the one piece PG make my life miserable as far as wireing goes? 2. How does the "anodized" material affect the shielding?
Any input/opinions/advice much appreciated!

As for #2, the metal pg will be an effective shield for the top of the control cavity, but the anodized surface is not conductive so you want to make sure you get down to the metal underneath whereever electrical contact is required.

The anodizing is only microns deep. Personally, I would just use sandpaper to scuff off the anodizing on the undersides where it needs to make electrical contact with the cavity shielding tape.

Thanks for the advice guys. Unfortunately I just recieved the PG yesterday and its PLASTIC! Simulated to look like anodized. It didn't mention this anywhere in the site ad. I'm a little disappointed. For $60 I expected metal. Anyway I'm contacting WD to see if I can return it.
I'm dying to install the Dimarzio 123's and BA2 I just wanted to all this at the same time. I saw some 62 RI JAZZ Pots I was considering. How would the instalation of these affect my control configuration - if at all?

I wouldn't use those (250K) pots with 123's. They'll work, but you'll lose a bit of high end. If that's desired, then go for it. Otherwise, here's what DiMarzio says (500K):

To beat a dead horse a little more...This thread is a wealth of information. I'm wiring to single coils to an Audere classic. Should the pots be in contact with the shielding?

Hey I got a couple questions. I read over five pages of this thread and looked into the orginal post I couldn't find this, or maybe I overlooked it. Do you connect the ground lug to anything, ie wiring it to the jack or anything? Also, I recall reading something somewhere that you could shield win aluminum foil instead of copper foil, is this true? Thanks for any help and what a great and helpful thread.

I finally found where I read that aluminum foil thing. So I guess it does work, but are there any downsides to using aluminum other than it's harder to install?

I'm about to install Dimarzio 123's in my MIM J. I got 500k pots for the bridge and neck VOL, 1mg TONE pot, .20 cap, and sheilding kit. I was wondering if I should refer to SonicSids diagram #224 or bgavins #265 (I think pgs 12 & 13)in this thread???

I also have non flux core silver solder will this do the trick or should I stick to the flux core??

Pot shells, definitely in contact with the shielding.
Ground lug should be used for the bridge ground wire, pup shields, and any "equipment ground" wires. It needs to be connected to the shield.
As for the pot terminals that commonly are bent back and connected to the shells, those are "signal grounds" and are in the amplified signal circuit. I recommend lifting those, isolating all the signal ground wires, tying them together, and connecting that bundle to ground only at one point - the jack. This last paragraph has been discussed extensively in this thread, and FYI not everyone thinks it is important.

just though I'd post up my recent shielding effort on a project Ibby SG-505. First time I have ever done thing, I'm quite happy with the result. Just need some more tape to do the neck pickup route!! All tack soldered and perfect continuity all round!!

I just finished shielding my MIM Jazz. I also replaced the p/u's with Dimarzio 123's, the bridge with a BA2, the volume pots w/ 500k's, the tone pot w/ 1meg and the cap with .020. My shielding read 0 ohms across all surfaces. I was up until about 4:30am last night dodging solder smoke and just strung it up about 10 minutes ago. All my anticipation and excitement was awarded with silence!! I have absolutely no sound!! I'll attach some pics of my wireing. Can you guys please help me.

Oops! Not the kind of silence you were after? Presuming that the cable and system you plugged into is working properly . . . "dead" silence usually indicates a wiring error. Question: what are those red wires coming from the pups? I would expect your pup hot signals to be on the white wires that you have twisted up with the black (pup cold) wires.
