If the J has standard single coils the answer is no because you can't solo either pickup without getting a lot of noise.

If the J has inline humbucking split coils (like a P inside a J cover) the answer is yes because you can get just about any tone (including the P sound) without the noise.

i'd agree that the Jazz is more versatile ... it was made to be that way .. ! but No Jazz bass can ever get the true P-bass tone mainly because of pickup placement ...

the only solution is 1 of each ... ha .... i have a Jazz type and a 51 P/J ... my mutant 5 stringers ... !

I voted carrots cause I'm a "to each their own" kind a guy... but, after playing both for decades, I gotta say Precisions rule. All my favorite pros use Precisions from Chris Wood and Rob Mercerio to a Nameless Ghoul.
