Just starting out ? 4 string ? P-Bass. One volume and one tone knob which is perfect for a beginner. A Precision really gives you an idea of what the bass is supposed to sound like. I could see a lot of beginners getting too melody minded and trebley on a jazz.

That's what I did. It should be a standard option IMHO. Otherwise, I always have tp piece something together. And, yes, I've played the PJ version but I prefer my P to be a P and a J to be a J. I'm fickle that way.
