If one was to take this thread title quite literally and one of each of these basses were to fight to the death in open combat, there would be no survivors. They're all really good at what they do.

Jazz vs P-Bass vs Stingray Vs rickenbacker

Honestly, if I could only have one I think any of them would do a fine job but because I am familiar with it I would choose a J bass. No wait, P bass. No wait...
I picked a Rick (modern 4003S). There is a pretty decent variety of sounds available with the versatile controls, the necks make my hands happy and dang it, I just like the way they look.
- I like the J Bass sound but don't feel it's as versatile as the Rick
- I like the Stingray sound but it's not for me
- I am bored to death with the P Bass sound
Honestly, my Fender Precision Custom Shop Closet Classic Pro 2011..... A jazz width neck, Precision pickups, and one jazz pickup... The best of all worlds!!! Simply a tru gem from Fender!

Not sure hopefully something with an ash body
Any modern 5-string can cover all musical styles. Combine with different strings to get the specific sound you want
Since we are talking about using those basses for a fight: P Bass ash body 12lbs for me.
An instrument is a tool, albeit a magical one, and you have to find the right tool for yourself. I've been the proud owner of a Rick Mapleglo 4001, a MIA Jazz, and a Stingray. Each is iconic, and each, in the hands of a great musician, is formidable. But I'm not a tone-chaser like so many folks on here. Over the last 35 years, I figured out that I don't really need toggle switches, preamps, active modes, or any of it.
No surprise that I'm a Precision bass man to the core now. I can just plug in, and it's all right there. Volume. Tone. Perfect every time. I have two, one with rounds and one with flats, and yes, by God, tort.

I can't really argue too much I guess since I own one.
I've never owned a MM but the ones I've tried played great but never liked the body.
I played a rick for years. Learned all about its short comings and ditched it.
I owned an MIA American standard P-bass for about a year. Never could get it to sound right so I axed it.
Tried (owned) an MIM Jazz deluxe for a few months. Total garbage. Ditched.
4 years ago I picked up an American standard Jazz bass. 2013.
Been my #1 ever since.
Tone to die for. Plays like butter.
There is nothing I can find (and believe me I have tried) that comes close to it.
Even another American Standard!
I can't find one made as well as this one or plays as good.
My vote is "carrots".
