Jazz vs P-Bass vs Stingray Vs rickenbacker

Yes! A thread that asks straight up which they prefer! Precision seems to be the dominant one, but I put my vote for jazz.

My only bass is a P and it's perfect for everything I play: Country, metal, classic rock, hard rock, blues rock, and pop.

I have owned a StingRay and a Jazz (and many others) in the past but the P is simply the best for me.

Rickenbacker: can dial in a bunch of different usable sounds, but might need some fiddling to do that
Precision: gets one basic tone that more-or-less works in a lot of settings, simple enough to be idiot-proof

I went with Ric - I'd rather have options even if it's more work.

The J - assuming I'm allowed to wire it completely differently (and with different pickups). Not a fan of VVT (ducks to avoid flying shrapnel)

I own all of these basses and like them all, but the Precision is definitely my pick. None of them can do everything, but the P-Bass sound just works for so much of the genres of music I play. Glad I don't have to get rid of the others, though! I like my Hofner, too.

I can get an MIM second hand that doesn't require me to destring the bridge every time I want to adjust the saddles. I can get a second hand American Standard Jazz that doesn't need me to adjust the truss rods on two sides of the neck. And frankly, despite all the hype I've been given, I tried a 4001 in the store and was underwhelmed with the sound. That's just the way it went for me. And I know that I can adjust the sound to my liking with the myriad of pickups out there for Rickys, I can get rid of the bridge problems with the hipshot bridge they made for Rickys and the stereo plugs are actually useful for me. But that all cost extra money and it would just be easier for any luthier, and myself to get a different bass. Now I'm going to sit and contemplate why I'm arguing with a stranger so seriously.

to each his own. No need to perpetuate stories about bridges falling of new Rics. my Ric 4003s has been my main player for 2 years and many gigs. I have had to adjust neck and intonation exactly zero times.
you dont like Ric's - that fine. repeating stories not based on first hand experience is not needed.

I purchased from another TB'er, locally... I didn't have a chance to really plug in, anywhere, but checked the overall condition, and weight of it... I was the third owner of this bass, and it still had the protective plastic on the pickguard... there's gotta be something wrong with this, I said, as I saw my money driving away, that day...

... got it home, plugged it in, and man, did it sound great! It feels slightly heavier than my Highway One, but my favorite thing about both are their necks... both smooth and fast, IMO. I get some great sounds out of it, too. I'm thinking the playability will improve, once I get a chance to set it up for my personal taste.

... not disappointed.

[edit] Wait, I jumped the gun... P bass would take a bullet. I'd grab the other three and run as fast as I could.

I too own all four; one kinda must have at least one of each of these icons. I voted other, however, as my Alembic (right) is versatile enough to cover the territory covered by each of the icons, and cover each territory well.

The HH Stingrays are nice, but I prefer the ceramic magnet pickups in my BTB:

I prefer ceramic pups over alnico, too - that's why I play an EBMM Sterling over a Stingray...

Was it worth it

What made me play better when I ditched my Fender (a '69 P) was a combination of a higher-definition sound, the feel of the instrument and the tonal variety. I wish I could be more precise than that - but it's the truth.
