Ok, I've got a Fender Jazz bass neck. I'd like to find a nice lightweight body to attach it to.

I'm not necessarily looking only for a J bass replacement body, I've looked on ebay at a few different things, and looked around a bit, Warmoth etc, but not sure what I'm looking for. I do like the Peavey style of body and I know the Millennium 4 is pretty light. I'd also like the Jazz Pickup type arrangement with a dual PU neck/Bridge type, but the main thing I would like a lighter weight body if I could find one...

Any suggestions?

if your lookin to fit a fender neck......really theres warmoth, USACG or what not, mighty mite (bleh ) and a few other fender part dealers.

So say I want to delve in and try to build one or have one built, what kind of wood, basswood or maybe basswood with a laminate top? Swamp Ash...

Weight is an issue...

If you're looking to build a body yourself (or have one built), you might want to consider doing a three-piece body. For example, a maple centerpiece with poplar wings would be relatively light while the more dense maple center could help your sustain.

Also, make sure to feel the weight(s) of the piece(s) of wood you decide on. Different pieces of wood, even from the same species, can vary drastically in weight.

Some luthiers have built whole bass bodies out of poplar (which is relatively light). Basswood is fairly light as well...

really it depends on what you want out of it. consider a good blank runs your around 75-100 bucks for non figured woods.

you can get timber much cheaper direct from a mill, some even do mail order. most will plane two faces to whatever thickness you want.
