I think its best just to say Pearl Jam are in a catagory of their own and leave it at that.
Anyway, a band as legendary as Pearl Jam shouldnt be lumped together with inferior bands (Nirvana excluded) and shouldnt even be spoken in the same sentence as Guns n' Roses or the word 'punk'.

a) listen to the verse guitar riff in "Even Flow", then the verse guitar riff in, say, "Welcome to the Jungle", and tell me you don't see even a slight similarity.

b) you're right, they are very un-punk. Which is why I don't consider them to be grunge per se as I think grunge is a combination on 70s punk and 70s rock

Hey, I am not a huge fan of GnR, but I do like some of their stuff. But Even Flow has nothing to do with Welcome to the jungle. It's Stevie Ray Vaughn. Quote Mike McCready:

What else is there to say...when Stone was searching for people for his new band he bumped into Mike at a party. He was jamming over an SRV album and Stone invited him to jam...the rest is history. That is where even flow's riff came from. Vaughn.
