Jeff Andrews a Jaco clone??? Or a lot more

You can hear Jaco in Jeff's playing as much as you can hear Jaco in Tom Kennedy's, Tal's, or anyone else's playing...

I had the pleasure to hear Kennedy with Stern a couple of nights last year. He is a great bass player! Cant say i thought much about Jaco when i heard him..

I really like Andrews as well and he is definitely more Jaco.

I like Jeff Andrews great player, has been for years



I also like Talkbass but like a lot of things I like there are negatives and one of the major negatives of Talkbass is the need of some people who,in order to praise a player they like,feel the need to bash someone else's work. People commenting on this thread have bashed Jeff,Jaco,another Jeff (Berlin) and I might have missed someone. People have also bashed the bass Jeff chooses to play,I'm pretty sure he could of got what ever he wanted just based on the high profile gig's he play's so it's obviously his preference. I know a bunch of guy's who aren't very good players who have some of the most expensive instruments on the market so as has been stated over and over;it's the guy not the axe. Ok Rant over

I wasn't necessarily 'bashing' his bass but more so wanted to hear how he sounded on something else! He's been using that 'thing' for many years now and it is what it is! His bass is fine and sounds fine. Just ugly and beat to &^%$!! I never question somebody's tools. Play what you like.

Ugly? what is this a fashion show???? (Joke) it does look like 2-3 different bass's put together

DW, I understand what you mean about wanting to hear him on another bass, but I have really come to respect bassists who stick to the instrument that has given them their sound. At a certain level, that Frankenprecision is Jeff Andrews, just like that Jazz with the goofy pickguard is Marcus Miller. Afterall, both have managed to get worldclass gigs with those basses.:cool:

the Frankenbass has a great woody bark in the horn register, both percussive and round- Jeff's many youtube-posted bop solos have a particularly tenor-like bite and timbre. It's "his sound" in those years. I think the bass looks and sounds amazing- iconic, like Jaco's or Steve Swallow's or Anthony Jackson's, and very much a well-honed, working tool.

I think the greats in jazz such as Jeff are following the lineage of the electric bass that jaco set the table for. I think jeff is one of the top 2-3 in the world now in my preferences for jazz bass players.

His tone and phrasing are something that I try to copy in my own playing and soloing. You can hear so much more than just a guitar center Jaco clone in his playing.

Jeff is truly and inspiration, a monster!
Would love to hear more of his recent work.

i dig Hadrien Feraud a great deal, but even he throws in a well-known Jaco lick or groove every few minutes to kick off a new idea, as well as playing Teen Town as part of his repertoire...
Jaco's like Charlie Parker to sax players- he set the electric-jazz bass bar so high, AND gave the world such a full, sumptuous catalogue of material, that it's very hard to be completely uninfluenced by him..
Jeff was at Berklee, methodically learning Teen Town in his room, just like dozens of us other guys up there in the 70s (including me!), but he has his own great straight-ahead bop vocabulary and is one of the great jazz bass soloists. Hope he can resurface in a huge way, at some point.

About that "Thing" he's playing.....
It just goes to show that a 4 string really can be all you need if you have something to say. Seems like a lot of players I like get an instrument and stick too it. That instrument then becomes the connection to their inner voice.(Marcus, Jaco Alex Al,Victor Bailey, Tal, Brian Bromberg ( on upright)) etc
So as far as I'm concerned, that "Thing" seems to be working for him.

Jaco was innovative in his field and influenced the development of the modern bass guitar playing. Jimmy Hendrix did the same thing. Would we claim that every guitar player that plays Hendrix style is a clone or a copycat?

Jeff played a ^ string tobias with Vital Information for a while!
Its Not the Bass that makes someone sound good,
its all in the Fingers and it was proven there and then!
He can make his old bass or his second 4 string sound much better as he is used to them, and it sounds great!

Jeff has taken bass playing and improvisation Further than Jaco!
He is never copying,its just influence but influence not just of Jaco but many others!

The thing that Jeff Andrews and Jaco have in common besides unbelievable technical ability, is that both of these players spent years of their lives listening to and learning the language of Jazz. The influence of Paul Chambers and Charlie Parker is stamped all over their playing. They understanding of the linear harmonic approach, outline chords and substitutions at the highest levels is a common thread in both of their styles. To less sophisticated ears, they sound the same. I don't think so.

There is no cloning going on here. Just two guys that really dedicated themselves to understanding the language of music and have/had the intellect and physical ability to play great melodic concepts in a virtuosic way.
