Do JD basses typically have a lower output than normal? I guess maybe my MTD might have had a higher output that normal. Anyway I got my Excellency 6 delivered yesterday and when I plugged it up I had to increase the gain and master on my TH500 by a 1/4 turn. No big deal it still growled like I had only dreamed about. Just curious. The bass is nothing short of amazing. Literally nothing. It's low where it needs to be low and crisp where it needs to be crisp. And that low mid growl. I never heard anything like that before.
in the passive mode or in active with all controls on flat, all JD have low output.
you just need to increase the gain a little bit more then usual.
I like the low output feature because of the inexistence of noise!
for live and recording situations is great!!
and because you can extract more from your preamp section of your amp.
I dont like basses that clip the amps preamp section too soon.

I had the same experience with my Excellency.
When I just got it, the output was so much lower than my Warwick Thumb that I wondered whether there was a defect with the electronics. When I turned up the gain on the amp however, my worries quickly disappeared.
The tone and power is absolutley there, and with very low noise indeed. It also plays very good with effect pedals. Easier to up the gain than to prevent clipping from an overly hot bass output...

Hey. long shot, but has anybody experimented with throwing a buffer in their Drozd prior to the preamp? I'm thinking about trying that out, likely with a Bartolini dual buffer, to isolate the pickups from each other before the blend pot. I'd have to change out the blend, volume, and tone pots (which I've already done anyway, trying other things out) for lower values. I have an active blend of sorts in my Warwicks due to them having active PUs, and I miss that nice smooth blending that you get with active or buffered pickups.
Aside from that, does anyone have any experience in any bass with the Bart buffer circuit? Any suggestions for alternate ones if you feel strongly about it? Thanks in advance

I picked this up on a trade a couple of weeks ago. Super craftsmanship. I really like the cool details, such as the flushed truss rod cover, strap locks, controls knobs and the cool shaped wooden pickup covers. I have a feeling this is a keeper

BTW, I did indeed build a buffer and installed it immediately after the pickups, and I did end up with a great, smooth active blend. Win!

Just picked one up on trade. Do I actually have to wait till it arrives (and post pics) before i get a #
This bass kills, best action and tone I have had in my hands, including over 40 Fodera's, I just want it in a four string version. This has had the aguilar pre swapped out for a deluxe Nordy pre, a major upgrade in tone and output, I recommend it for any of you Drozd owners out there.

Hey look, thats my old bass! ^ The only thing I didn't like about it was the pre-amp, so its funny that someone swapped it. I would trade you if I hadn't just picked up this babe...
Question for the club - what strings would you recommend for the Legend? The exposed cores on it have too long of exposed core, so the intonation sucks above the 24th fret.... which is the entire point of the bass. My "signature" strings are usually DR Black Beauties, but they don't make them in exposed or taper core so I wasn't sure if it would be okay to use them on the piezo bridge.

Intonation above the 24th fret will always suck regardless of strings. That is why you don't see many fretted instruments with more than 24/26 frets, it is almost impossible to have the first octave and the third octave on the same string be equally intonated.

I moved away from exposed core strings, and have been pretty happy with both SIT Power Steel and D'addario Prosteels, both in very light gauges. I originally investigated the SIT ones due to them being the manufacturer of the exposed core strings that Jerzy used to use and that came on my bass, but I spoke at length with Tim over there about the issues with exposed core strings in regards to intonation and weird harmonic overtones, and decided to try some of their other sets. I've also tried the Rock Brights Stainless and a couple others. To my ears, the Power Steel and Rock Bright Stainless sound essentially identical.

Cool, I'll look into it. Do you have a piezo bridge? My only worry is those little tiny saddles.

Yes I don't like taper core strings either. I have a 36 fret(fretless) six string excellency and at present I am using flatwounds on it... regular wrap.
for roundwounds I use Dean Markley SuperRounds. they are also regular wrap. I don't have piezo's but it wouldn't make a difference.

Cool, thanks guys. Looks like I'll throw a set of black beauties on it right now. I know not everyone likes the look, but I think black strings with the gold hardware and ebony fretboard will be SWEET!
You have larger gauges with the new strings I am assuming? Are the strings properly seated in the nut slots, and bridge saddle slots?
Is there relief in the neck when the strings are at pitch? Can you tighten the truss rod? If you tighten the truss rod, what is the result?

OK well the gauges don't seem overly large. Yes. Make sure the saddles are correctly orientated. Adjusting the truss rod is no big fuss. No need to worry about little adjustments and waiting a day etc. Just don't crank on it hard if you feel it doesn't want to turn.
When you said the neck was straight... were the strings on and at pitch? or were they off or loose? With strings off it would not be unusual to have some backbow on the neck which will straighten out when the strings are back on under tension.
