Jet Phaser

The signal chain was:
passive P w/flats --> Jet Phaser --> CS3 --> Summit DI --> soundcard

No expression pedal, however it has a footswitch which switches between fast and slow settings, and it ramps the speed up/down between them! :cool:

really need some advice...

currently there's one in a local shop, in very good condition, for around 300ish US... what do you think ?

since it's been a while... might ask this too... are there any combination (of fuzz and phaser) that kind produce the same sound ? 'cuz i also have a pigtronix ep-1... and yet to find the right combination (with a fuzz pedal) to come close with the jet phaser

I'd say snap it up, you can easily resell for $350 to $400. Although I used to go around saying "any combination of a good phaser and a good fuzz should work fine", I have since learned that is not true. The tricky part is that most phasers are 2-stage or 4-stage, and the Jet Phaser is an 8-stage IIRC. The number of stages affects the depth and harmonic content of the sweep. There was some effects builder on here not long ago saying the number of stages had nothing to do with anything, but I honestly think it was because he was trying to sell us his 4-stage phaser design. Oh yeah, it was Toadworks. At any rate, very few phasers have the depth and harmonic content of an 8-stage Jet Phaser. The only one I know of off the top of my head is the Maxon PH-350.
 
I used to own a Roland Jet Phase. It is rad. No other fuzz/phaser combination is really gonna match the sound, I've tried a lot of them. But Larry Graham uses it in combination with other fuzz pedals. By itself on bass, the unit is more "polite". I bought it for like $250 and sold it for $480.

That was me, and I wasn't trying to sell anyone anything - that's what the website & dealers are for. I was just trying to educate people on how a phaser works, because it seemed as though no one actually knew. I guess I didn't explain it well.

At the risk of being accused of trying to sell our design, in a nutshell - what makes phasers sound 'deep' is the degree of offset between the original and affected signals (offset is just a term for how far out-of-phase two signals are). Each 'stage' creates offset, but not all stages are created equally - if you look at all the different phasers on the market, depending on their design, each unit's stages creates a different amount of offset from other designs.

So, if you have a 20 stage phaser, and each stage provides 1 degree of offset, you have a 20 stage phaser that won't sound like it's doing anything.

What I was trying to get across is, don't ask 'how many stages', because that is a meaningless, arbitrary value - it only means something if you know how much offset each stage provides, and I can guarantee you that is something most manufacturers won't list on their product specs. There are 8-stage phasers on the market that create less offset (and therefore sound less 'deep') than ours. Does that mean ours is better? Not necessarily, but it does mean that when your first questions is "how many stages does it have", you don't really understand what you are asking, or why your asking it.

I apologize if that comes off slightly a-hole-ish, I don't mean it to be... but answering the same meaningless question (and having someone attach meaning to the answer) over and over gets a little frustrating.
 
Fair enough. And FWIW, I think I understand your position better now than I did when you presented it previously. I don't know if it's just the wording, or what. But it does make sense that there is no universal correlation between a "stage" and any specific amount of phase offset.

Reading it, perhaps people can understand why there might still be some confusion or lack of understanding.

For future reference, Toadworks, you will be better understood if you answer peoples' "how many stages" question with the very simple description given above. Paraphrased: "Each stage provides a certain amount phase offset. But different manufacturers will design with different amounts of phase offset in each stage. So "eight stages" of X amount of phase offset will sound identical to "four stages" of 2X that amount of offset."

I think that type of simple math will make it easier for people to swallow, rather than starting right in with "stages are meaningless"... even if they are. ;)
