Jethro Tull

I was just wondering if anyone ever journeyed to the "Tull Convention" that was an annual event in Europe in the 90's?

Also, what is your fav.Tull song for bass?

Bouree is bliss!

ahh...Glenn of the flatwounds and headbands

I have so many I dont know where to start. I spent many teenage years in the basement copping Bouree and others...

Here's a few more obscure entries:

Wondering Again from Living In the Past (Cornick)
The middle section of Aqualung(Hammond2)
Inside from Benefit (Cornick)
Dr. Bogenbaum Living in the Past (Cornick)
Hunting Girl (Glascock)

Anyone ever meet any of these guys?

There is noe doubt whatsoever what song that is the best Jethro performance:
Bourre! :hyper:

Really, my main instrument (closely followed by bass) is actually (classical) flute. But I love playing the Ian Anderson style too, and Bouree is pretty cool. I've never cared too much for Jethros music exept the flute playing. It doesnt matter that he's not the best flutist in the world as long as he continues to play whilst standing on one leg! :)

"Bouree" is a perfect "bass song"--the playing is fabulous, and Cornick's Thunderbird tone is masterful.

Funny thing...although Glenn definitely played Birds I don't think he did on "Bouree".

He used that weird J-bass with the defretted lefty neck on the first album, he's seen with an EB-2 on the cover of "Benefit" and ALL the concert shots at Glenn's web site show him with either the Jazz or an EB-3!

He does play a reverse TBird II in film of Tull at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 and the Wild Turkey photos on Glenn's site show him with a non-reverse TB II in most of the pics, though later ones show him with a maple neck Jazz.

Although he was clearly a fingerstyle player live in one interview I read he said he always recorded with a pick!!!

Well, you can always email him to find out for sure...there's a link on his site.

I think we lost this pic of him with the Frankenstein jazz
in the upgrade.

I emailed him to clarify the date I saw him in concert in Providence, he scanned the page for me and emailed it
back. Not a long answer, but an answer, he does respond
to inquiries.

Love to see all the responses....

Norweigen: Bouree was great..and was one of a handful of early listenings for me that solidified my passion for bass guitar....now dont laugh, but my very first sucker punch for bass at 12 (?) years old was...the intro to "I'm a Man" by Chicago....to this day once a year I pick up my 73 P bass with flatwounds and a pick and go to it for 3-4 minutes.

...by the way I loved visiting your country!

THOR- man great selections too....did you email him recently or a while ago?

JOSH-
That was a great live recording..when it came out, I dident know if I liked the MM as much as the P bass for Tull...just sounded different for that band (I had way too much spare time growing up) Glascock was a fine player...!

WILL PLAY- whenever I play any older Tull stuff on my fancy high falutin super clean full range fancy high end basses ....it sounds like GARBAGE...!!!!
Imagine that...all that time , energy and money and all I really need is my 70s J and P with old strings .......(well until the session starts)

BRAINROST- Cool you gigged with him...I actually saw Dave play. Was it a similiar style of music ? Here or over the Pond?

I've tried to figure out what Glenn played on what...could never really figure it out just on tone on the records. sometimes it could have been the Fender...or then the EB3 ..or Bird...was so hard for me to tell.. I hear the P with Hammond2 (although I "think" its a Jazz on Passion Play and a short scale bass on early HH recordings), I heard the P with Glascock and then the MM later...but Glenn was harder.
You did solve one thing about him though- that although he appeared to use fingers live his attack was usually more pointed on many tunes on record than at least I would have thought for fingers.

Well...instead of waiting for him to PM me ..i'll just email him..might be faster :D

Anyone see Cornick or Hammond2 live other than Thor?

I missed Cornick but saw the Minstrel In the Gallery tour with HH in full regalia- striped Zebra outfit head to toe with his striped matching P bass jumping and kicking around like a mad Englishman..actually they all were. ...including John Evans
Jeffrey might have been just happy to have landed the gig ...I dont know....

Glen Cornwick was the guy! I actually saw him with his own band in NYC shortly after he left Tull. I can't remember the name of the band but I remember that they featured him onstage alone with his bass, it was a black fender and he played his tail off.
Sanch

I emailed him about 6 months ago. I was trying to reconstruct
when that concert actually was. Turned out he had a diary with all the dates noted. That resolved a conflict I saw on a website in England that listed all of JT's old concert dates.
They had it listed as the Providence Civic Center (now Dunkin' Donut's Center), which wasn't built until '73. No way that was
correct. This show was in November of 1970. Diary scan
enclosed. Here was his response

from Glenn Cornick

November 5 1970 - my last tour with the band! We were already doing 'My God' which would later be on Aqualung. I don't have any specific memories of the gig but that was a great tour.
Nice hearing from you.
Glenn

I emailed him today to ask him about your gear questions,
we'll see what comes out of that ...
( If he responds I WILL ask him to PM you ! )

Thor....fun to see his itinerary- thanks. Will look forward to hearing if he does respond to your email too.....I went back and listened to the old stuff the other night, ya I'm stumped.

Josh, I havent checked out the Christmas album yet....saw Noyce with them last year... I dont know...not exactly like the old days for me...

Never saw wild Turkey Mike ...but I'll tell you , I loved the era and music of Tull during the HH days - loved his parts too...

I am partial to John Glascock. I dont think Dave Pegg spent a lot of time with Tull but is a great player, especially his work with Fairport Convention who had a great rhythm section.

I think Peggy spent the longest time in Tull actually...from late 70's or early 80's to sometime in the 90's?

I know he was part time in Fairport too during that time and eventually left to be with them full time.

Just to be off- topic....if you go to the official JT website Peggy is selling off some pretty intersting personal gear from hisTull era as a result of a divorce....anyone a collector?
