Jethro Tull

Am i surprised to see so much feedback on this subject ! since running out of sabbath and zep tunes to learn(i've learned all the ones i really like for now)I have switched gears and went with Tull for a while.
There's so many great songs they did that are'nt overplayed on the radio(teacher, hymn,ETC)I'm not into playing the songs that our local radio station wears down to the wire, taking all the enjoyment out of playing/listening to my favorite songs.
Theres so much info here I had no idea on,I always thought it was one bassist all the time for tull(shows you what I know :D )thanks for broadining my horizons everyone :bassist:

Must..not...let...thread...die... :smug:

Anyway, I'm glad so many people here like Tull (heck, I'm glad if people just KNOW them).

I like Jeffrey Hammond best, he's got some great bass on "Warchild'. Jonathan Noyce, to me, seems like a good bassist. I've seem Tull live last year (in fact, it's been a year tomorrow), I've got the 'Living with the past'-dvd, and all I can say is: I like the guy.

Have the christmas album too, and I was waiting for him to do the solo on 'bouree', but there was none :hmm: But the rest of the songs are ok.

Hey Glenn,
Welcome to Talkbass, and thanks for dropping by this thread that seems to have gone on and on for several years...a testament to how influencial and loved Jethro Tull still is! :D Since you're here and have made yourself available for questions....what are your thoughts and feelings about getting back with the bad for the DVD project? Was that something that you had been thinking about or had been discussing with Ian and the guys, or did it just "happen"?

Jay

p.s. I'm a big fan, by the way, and am thrilled that you not only managed to find Talkbass, but this thread as well! ;)

A lot of people have asked what bass I played on Bouree. It was a 69 stock sunburst Precision which I only occasionally used on stage as I was, at that time mainly using a stock 69 Walnut EB3. I didn't get my Thunderbird till the Autumn of 70 though I'd been trying to find one for over a year. The only other song I remember recording with that Precision was 'Jeffrey goes to Leicester Square'.

My thoughts about the DVD session! Well it was a classic Ian Anderson 'No Economy Spared' deal. I felt we could have done something really good if we had some time to rehearse but the show was done with absolutely no rehearsal. It was basically just jamming our way through songs that we hadn't played together for 30 something years. I had a funny feeling that Ian didn't want it to be too good! The best thing I got out of the trip was that we had a baby boy exactly 9 months after the show! Shows what a trip to Britain in January will do for you!

Hi Glenn

I am , and have been , a huge fan of yours for..well..as long as I remember playing or even hearing a bass guitar....thanks for coming on to the thread! There are so many things I'd be curious about ..but I'll just ask a few small things for now:)

Was there any criteria that you used to decide which songs you might have used fingers or a pick for?

Did you ever get to know any of the other Tull bassists after you, and did you have any favorites and why?

Have to thank you for being one of my inspirations for picking up the instrument...and playing classic lines on some of my favorite music of all time!

Cheers,
Mitch

Well, that's just plain out of hand! Glenn Cornick! AWESOME!

I'll add myself to the list of Tull fans -- ever since I found the 8-track of "Too Old to Rock'n'Roll, Too Young To Die" in my Aunt's car at age 8. Seen the band like 4 times, owned every record at one time or another.

My faves are certainly "This Was" and "Stand Up". But I love pretty much every record up until "Stormwatch", and a good bit afterwards. I listened to tape 2 of the first boxed-set every time I mowed the lawn -- couldn't get enough of the Chateau D'isaster material. Finally wore the tape through last year sometime.... man, oh man.

'Bouree' showed me that you could play chords on a bass! And it would sound GREAT! Thanks, Glenn!

I am a fan of J.T and as a bass player of 2 plus years the songs are within my realm of expertise(or lack of).
I can play about 5 songs from the top and enjoy doing so,nice licks but simple enuff to learn in a day or two.
Hey Josh,B.O.C and J.Tull anre doing a free concert here in CT. in the month of AUG.I heard it advertised on WPLR but cannot remember where, actually I did'nt really hear where for I would have remembered. :hyper:

I'm going to England and Scotland this sept- oct. Has anyone ever attended a JT convention?- I know they used to have them in the 80's-90s at different places. The band and/or parts of it plus older members do show up to play or schmooze. I'm going to try to find out if they still exist unless anyone here has any information...

Maby Ian would let me visit his salmon farm...? :hyper:

Maby I could buy one of Jeffrey's paintings?

I truly dont get this way about anything else- forgive me.

Me thinks if you can name all the bass players in the history of Tull that would be a mighty large list. Glen Cornick was playing bass and Tony Iommi played slide when Tull was on the Stones Rock n Roll Circus in the 60s. Tull does a great verision of Song for Jeffrey! The Stones refused to release it until recently because THe Who blew them away. Check out the DVD if you can, even has an amalgam of dudes for the show called the Dirty Mac, consisting Clapton on lead, Lennon on rhythm and vocals, Keith Richards on bass, and Mitch Mitchell on drums . Plus! Yoko in her bag promoting "bagism".

My age is starting to seep through the cracks!

maby we're too old to rock and roll...but ...not yet too old to die...!

I still love playing to the first side of Thick as a Brick- does anyone know what bass Jeffrey used for that recording? It sounds like a P..but sometimes a J too....

Were we "had"? I love the internet.....

:crying:

You were not 'had'!

Before we lost internet access at the company, I emailed Glenn the link to the thread with the subject
'They are still talking about you ..." and I give him credit
for taking the time to register and respond.

I know all of us would like to hear A LOT MORE about
what equipment he was using and when.

Acc to his website, he did get remarried recently, and like Joshua says, (unlike us, who never toured with a JT...) has a life outside of TB.

But it was nice of him to visit and answer a few questions for us.

Thanks Glenn!

Hope to see you again soon.

And Benefit stays in the CD wallet so I can listen to it at the required maximum volume...
