JGR's 1200 watt micro - let the madness begin!!!!!

... the earlier "Rock" clip is in the same range as a my Mesa Buster when pushed, which is a sound I'm very happy with (currently into a Barefaced G3 Super Compact, so no tweeter, though I kinda wish I had a little more top end sparkle at times).

From playing one of the first versions of Johns 12ax7 preamps, I've got to say that, I wish the low mid would have been at 150hz. For me, that is always where the low mid punch comes from. Liked the other 3 eq points though. If you are serious about having switchable mid points, that would be very cool. For a 4 band, in my world, I'd have selectable lows at 40hz/80hz, switchable mid at 150/300, switchable mid 800/1.6k, selectable high at 3k/6k. Sounds like alot but, that gives you all the options you could ever need to compensate for different cabs, rooms, di, very different tones, etc. I know that isn't realistic but, Im surprised a company hasn't done that yet.

Wow. Just found this thread today and _read the whole thing_ and it all sounds just perfect from the inductive eq set points to those great looking brownies ..

I too much preferred the earlier clips, but most of that had to do with what was being played as opposed to what amp was being used.

Exactly! I was excited to have other folks with completely different styles, tastes, and gear have a chance to play through it (and have it work for them). It's an important data point, and you don't want to design in a vacuum. I'm always amazed how different each person sounds, even using all the same gear. The bass is such a dynamic instrument that the player's touch always has a profound impact on the final sound.

Maybe I'll shoot a video through my NV412 for another point in the rock side of the spectrum. With my basses and attack, it pretty much always sounds aggressive!

I think Tech 21 has you covered at those frequencies! :)

In all seriousness, the original 1U 12ax7 preamp design evolved to where the low mid is more powerful and hits that punch area better, even at 220Hz. I did recently do a mod which drops it down more into that range, and it does work very well with that particular EQ setup.

That said, apples to oranges as this design is completely different in all respects. The bass and low mid cover that punch area very well, and setting the low mid any lower does not sound good (I tried it). These controls are extremely powerful and the Q changes in a very musical way as you continue to boost. Same with 3kHz - way too high with respect to the treble control. There's not really any gaps, even with the two mid bands, and if I do add the third, it's just gravy.

As I mentioned before, this type of EQ is very musical and not meant to be surgical like the SS parametrics which I personally don't care for as they often leave you endlessly tweaking and don't sound as musical/natural IME. This EQ is more in line with the old style channel strips and what you find in the boutique/high end studio stuff nowadays. It will add character and it's the non-linearities that make it work so well and so simple to use in a musical context.

+1

I see too many amp makers trying to cater to everybodies whims with things like two sweepable mids, a graphic EQ, variable presence and resonance, etc., etc., and the fiddeling interferes with the playing.

Yep. Personally, I was thrilled to hear a couple of clips played finger style and even more so, one featuring a fretless BG. I really respect and enjoy all the clips from JGR, Chris, etc., but one can only read so far between the lines sometimes.

I haven't posted much on here in awhile or done anymore videos because I've hit on a combination of gear that has been really thought out and well designed, just like John's amp appears to be. This amp or a preamp version is one of the very few things that evens interests me anymore. It is a very strange feeling for me to be so close to satisfied. Im experimenting with a few preamps but, nothing has been 100% in that regaurd, the rest of my rig is firmly set.

Will this pair well with my 2011 Ampeg Heritage 810e cabinet? I recently sold the SVT I bought at the same time ...

The cab manual says 4 ohms 800 watts, 1600 watts peak.

I think so - power is a good match, and I was just playing through my NV412 and it sounds lovely, so I don't see why not.
