JHS hate

Yeah I think the JHS hate train has lost most of it's steam over the last few years- I for one discount the whole church thing because it sounds like his involvement was minimal and certainly nothing to do with the Bad Stuff™ going on at said church. It's hard to judge people on tangential affiliations like that anyway, and heck, half the midwest is involved in those kinds of churches.
The circuit cloning is another thing, but it seems to be water under the bridge and his relations with other pedal manufacturers seem to be pretty good, so if it's good enough for them it's good enough for me.

If any of it still bugs you, buy secondhand and spray paint the enclosure. Andy won't get any of your money or any advertising from you that way, and you'll still wind up with the sound you want.

Of course, if someone is really upset about copying, then they should never buy anything made by Marshall, which copied a Fender circuit, Mesa, which did the same thing, or any company that builds copies of Fender shaped objects.

They should also refuse to purchase any music that uses samples.

Or listen to anything by Clapton or Led Zeppelin.

I guess at the end of the day, if someone is upset by copying, there’s a lot of stuff they should be avoiding if they want to be consistent. I get that everyone has their line, but there’s so much in life where we don’t seem to mind copying, it seems odd to draw the line at pedals…especially when many of them are probably copying designs that were in turn influenced by something else themselves.

Frankly, I’m of the view of “buy what you like” and “if you don’t want to buy something, that’s fine, but respect that others have the right to buy things you don’t like”.

Those who whine about "cancel culture" are perfectly OK with using that exact same behavior to express their own agenda. You know, stuff like burning Nike shoes.

Burning shoes makes toxic fumes…not good.

Frankly, my sneaker dollars go to companies that focus on making shoes that are good for you feet, like New Balance or On Running.

If you have no feet issues, plenty of choice out there, including Nike, Adidas, Puma, etc.

If you do have foot issues, then New Balance, On, Merrill, Keene, Finn Comfort, Ecco, and Birkenstock are all good choices.

Yep, really high arches. I hate wearing shoes, but when I do, it's New Balance. Mostly I wear Keen sandals. The only upside of the horrific climate here is that I get to wear sandals about 11 months a year.

Now, back to pedals. If OP wants a Moonshine, they by all means get one. I will say, though, that every sound sample I've heard that uses a JHS pedal, and my experience trying one (my guitarist son has one), there's a noticeable loss of low end. Just be aware that you might end up wanting some EQ in the chain to compensate for that.

Alternatively, the suggestion of the Pork Loin is a good one. If I had to cut down to only two dirt pedals (THE HORROR!) it'd be a Damnation MBD-2 and a Way Huge Pork n Pickle.

I used to wear the Targhee sandal all year, for years, until they stopped making the removable lining version in Portland. Now its a single foam sole made in wherever. What model do you wear and do you LOVE them?

You’d be hard pressed to find a distortion/fuzz/overdrive that isn’t a copy/clone (as with most other pedals). Many pedal makers give them names reminiscent of the original and even use similar enclosures and colors. They frequently “tweak” them, so you may find you prefer one over the other based upon the this. The whole copy argument comes mostly from someone, with limited information, running with it. What I find more egregious is distortion/fuzz/overdrive pedals, containing less than $20 in parts (the enclosure and switches being the most expensive by far), selling for hundreds. When I build/mod something, I typically buy several of each component since they are so cheap and shipping is the single most expensive component. Buy what sounds good to you. In the end, if you spend enough time on TB, you’ll probably buy a few more versions of it anyway. IMHO, I think JHS makes good stuff, but a little pricey. And I watch Josh regularly; he often features builders I would not normally find and rarely pushes his own stuff.

JHS repaired a pedal for me that I bought long before any drama and which they no longer make, even though I couldn’t find the proof of purchase e-mail or receipt.

On the other hand did he ever disavow the aforementioned hate group? Honest question in search of an answer, I do not feel like diving down this rabbithole.

For years I wore Teva Dozer IIIs until they stopped making them, though maybe they're back now? Not sure. Anyway, when they stopped (this would have been 2018), I switched to Keen Newport H2s, which I actually like better—easier on-and-off without feeling loose on my foot. Do I *LOVE* them? Hmm. Probably not—but I like them enough that I stopped looking for something else to wear and when my current pair wears out, I'll probably just buy another.

If you want a JHS pedal, just go get yourself one.

The whole JHS thing is a long dead issue. One where anyone who takes the time to seriously dig into it (although why even bother after all this time?) soon discovers that the bulk of the “reasons” given for the outrage were either exaggerated, highly selective in their application of their “moral” arguments, or flat out falsehoods.

One more example of a tempest in a teacup dogpile that got totally out of hand, as so many things on the internet tend to do.

Time to get a life and move on.

I think I finally found an OD pedal to my liking (Moonshine by JHS). I did some reading about the hate and boycotting of JHS pedals from consumers. I am with that group also! Is there a pedal similar to the Moonshine that I can purchase? All input is appreciated.

P.S. The pedal has to have a blend/clean function.
Just buy a used one. Company won't profit a dime, and you'll get the pedal you want.

How you equate things is up to you, but perhaps what they did for you probably is a more relevant to your life than whether or not someone said something about a group of people, some members of which may have done something that some people find objectionable.

I do my best to help others, and I don’t turn down overtures of friendship or kindness from people that I may have serious disagreements with…and trust me, I find myself doing that A LOT, but hey, it pays the bills! ;)

He disavowed or something - but all of them say "I didn't do it" or "I am sorry if my behavior makes you not like me anymore, forgive me"...and like people said he did a lot to rehabilitate his image. There was also more in his past related to Devi Ever that's kinda gross but hard to pick out facts from accusations...and honestly, if I was held up to my worst days I don't think I'd fare well either.

It's up to you if you care or not...Bill Cosby got out of jail, Harvey Weinstein went to sex rehab...the list of shamed is long and gross, but if you don't dig JHS, there isn't really anything in his line that is unique that you couldn't pick something else.

We are all hypocritical in how we live our lives, but you gotta find the lines that you are willing to cross or won't cross.
