Yep, I agree. I use it subtly and have trouble turning it off. It really fills that “last 10 percent” of my tone. It acts much differently depending on how hot your bass is, obviously. It gets plenty dirty for me when I need overdrive as an effect but most of the time I use it to try and recreate an amp-like push in my ears. It’s pretty stellar at that. Just like the Bass the World guy said, I want my bass to sound clean but not really. I’m very impressed so far.

JHS Morning Glory Clean

Played through one on Sunday at church. It's really easy to dial in an "amp that is just starting to push back" kinda tone - not obviously dirty, but not really clean either. I don't like how it distorts when you crank the gain, but I don't really like that kind of tone from any overdrive, so there's nothing negative here - it has a wide range of overdrive tones, I just like the clean-ish end of the dirt spectrum, and it does that very well. Plenty of low end extension when it's set up that way (I play 5's, and the PA's i play through will pass 30 Hz gloriously, so I'm really sensitive to low end loss).
Mine arrived from Amazon today. I fully expected to fiddle with it for 30 minutes then probably return it. Nope. Sounded pretty darn good. I compared it to my beloved DCX Bass (set flat) with lots of saturation and - what? - I liked the MG better? How can that be? So, switched the DCX to OD mode and the two worked well together for light drive and the high gain drive. More testing tomorrow.
I was fiddling around a lot so not sure. More testing to follow, but my first impression surprised me. I was truly expecting to not like it much, just another guitar pedal that was so so on bass. As I mentioned I had the EQ flat on the DCX which I normally don't do, but left it flat just to compare the saturation sounds.
I got this a few days ago and loved it immediately. But now, on the fully clean side the sound is breaking up like it’s lost its headroom somehow. There must be an issue so. I messaged JHs to see if I could exchange for a new one. I hope it’s just a failure because I really liked it.
Were you using a high output bass? I can get it to “leak” as well when full clean with my Stingray.
Makes sense to me. I sold off my DCX. The MGclean is (to me) much more usable. The DCX goes from doing almost nothing to too much. With the tiniest turn of the gain knob. The MGclean is much more graceful in how it transitions from clean to dirty. So, it costs less.
I find that it seems to wake up or open up the sound of some basses. For a wide spectrum voiced bass it has less of an effect. Reminds me of the barbershop and the kassleder jellyfish but with more control on the blend so you can keep the clean edges of your bass if that is what you are after. It has a long throw from very clean to a bit of drive, so you can really dial it in.
I think I’m going with the Greer Lightspeed over the MG Clean. Of course, it’s more costly but works on bass so well.

Depends what you are playing
I set the clean to max, then tone and drive to half. Then play a note and blend in until I get what I want (reduce clean slowly). Then set the output level to unity match with the pedal disengaged.
If I’m playing with flats I increase the tone and drive a bit more to give it some bite in the mix.
Have using it as an always on low drive.
Pbass, drive on edge of break up, add clean just to get back some pick attack, boosting a little highs (affects only drive). Dig hard and it distorts, play lightly, it cleans up… very dynamic and responsive to the touch.

It’s a freaking bluesbreaker. There ain’t no big secret on how to use it.
