JHS Morning Glory Clean

I heard back from JHS, and it's true that it should only be ran it 9 volts. They gave me the okay to run their Whitey Tighty Compressor at 18 volts, so they do seem to actually be answering the question rather than parroting back the advertised specs.

The clipping isn't bad though, to my ears. It bugs me a bit in theory, but in practice I don't feel like it takes way from the sound I'm going for. To me this ones a keeper.

I was able to snatch a B-stock up locally for a great price. I had already listened to the demo's online so I suspected this would be a great fit for my uses.

But wow. It sounds and feels even better than I expected. The most truly transparent OD i've tried so far, sounds perfect with flats. Amazing gain texture, bitey yet never intrusive. Exactly the sound in my head. And i've tried a LOT: Barbershop, Spark, BJFE and Bearfoot Blueberries, Azure Drive, Dark Driving, Tubedrve, Ceriatone Centura, Nobels etc etc.

IF your basses don't clip/distort the clean blend, the Morning Glory Clean is exactly what so many people have asked for - a transparent bass OD that just adds a little bit of hair or grit while not changing the tone of your bass or amp.

My bass loaded with Turner multicoils and the Lusithand NFP Special is a no go. That bass has ridiculously high output and aggression and it clips the JHS dramatically. My next highest output bass CAN clip it if I boost the EQ a fair amount and play hard. All of my other basses work perfectly fine with it.

Unlike the Barbershop (which I love on guitar and on bass when it isn't pushed too hard) the MG doesn't get blown out or "kazoo" sounding, if (as noted) your basses don't clip the clean blend.

For now I'm sticking with the Damnation Audio Bass Amp Grinder (run very low gain) and/or MBD3. But I'm hanging on to the MG Clean. For certain basses it's pretty fantastic. The MBD is also transparent, but tends to be "bigger" due to the clean lows rolled in. The Amp Grinder isn't transparent, it impacts a Rat like EQ curve (as expected) but I really like what it does for most of my basses. But for one bass that is naturally clangy, the AG just enhances that too much and the MG Clean works better. And for my pseudo PBass with flats (EB Cobalts) I also prefer the MG Clean. Fantastic pedal with the noted drawback of potentially clipping the clean side.

I still absolutely love the BJFE Blueberry and it's variants. The version JohnK built for me with the Zeibek Submarine in the same enclosure is one of my favorite bass drives after years and years of trying other things. But the Blueberry circuit isn't all that transparent, especially at lower tone/higher gain settings.

The Spark, Nobels, and Barbershop are pretty transparent (I haven't tried the Ceriatone), as is the Greer Lightspeed. And I love all of them on guitar, but they've never quite worked for me on bass. The MG Clean really does. As always, YMMV etc.
