Joe Barden J Bass pups question

Buyer beware. I bought a set of Strat pickups from Joe Barden years ago and it was a horrid experience. They arrived without tape wrapped around the coils, just bare exposed wire. I had no idea they weren't supposed to be like that. So upon installation the wires were damaged. Sent them back and he refused to replace them since I installed them, even though they were damaged due to the fact that they had no protective covering on them.

I'll never touch another Barden product again. Fralin makes a much better Jazz pickup for less money.

They come with cloth tape wrapped around them now.

I had to repair a Barden Tele pickup not too long ago.

They were supposed to back then too, apparently. Not sure how these made it through QC. That's why it irked me so bad when he refused to replace them. I've been warning people of Barden's shadiness ever since.

That's why it didn't surprise me when Barden went out of business.

I've never seen a Fender Strat pickup with tape wrapped around the coil, and I've seen quite a few. Sounds like the damage was due to reckless installation.

And I'm not defending Barden in any way, shape, or form.

Right, but most Strat pickups use covers, so the windings are protected. Bardens don't use covers, so the windings are exposed.

Now it looks like he puts clear tape on the white pickups, and black cloth tape on the black pickups:

If his pickups don't use covers, it is pretty lame not to protect the coil. I assumed they were stock style replacements which used covers.
