John Entwistle Bass Sound

I'm fairly new to this forum, so I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but it's something I've been wondering for the longest time.

Near John's later career, in like the late 90s and early 2000s, he has this real thick, low, and slightly distorted sound to his bass that I just want to get on mine. I like more of a treble sound in my bass, but I want to get that kind of distorted tone he has. If anyone can tell me what kind of pedals or anything like that I'd need to achieve that sound, help me out.
Thanks.

I think his sound came mostly from his powerful finger strokes. He wasn't nice to his strings, he hammered on them real good. Heavy gain/thick distortion added to his unique sound.

Could you imagine how he would have sounded if he could fdind a lutheran who could put the strings on the other side of the frets, where he always wanted them? How much does anyone think his French horn playing had to do with his bass sound and style?

Hmmmm............
I don't know if I'm in the minority here but as much as I love Entwistle, and I love him, I thought his tone was terrible at the end of his career. Too much treble, too much distortion.
In the Who's heyday his bass sounded like a bass!
