Joni Mitchell talks Jaco

This connection got me an A- on a paper comparing Jaco and Mingus. It was just luck, I had no idea at the outset that Jaco was on a tribute album by Joni...
Jaco was unique, as is Joni. I, for one, enjoyed his playing with her a lot more than I did WR, and I grew up on WR, so...

I bought the"Shadows And Light" DVD about ten years ago.
I loved it!
I was heavily into Weather Report and The Pat Metheny Group back when they started.
And was elated to find both of them backing Joni.
Joni was ready for Jaco before She met him.
He was a missing puzzle piece in Her music.

The first time I saw Joni was the S&L tour in '79. Sadly it was the only time I got to see Jaco.
I saw Jaco with Weather Report at The Arlington theater in Santa Barbara Ca in 1981
They were promoting "8:30"
Jaco did a 15 minute bass solo of "Slang"
He was sitting on a stool.
Halfway through the solo,he gets up and violently throws the stool to the side.
The the blue spotlight reflecting off the chrome control plate of his Jazz into my eyes.
I may be the only one here on TB who didn't really care for Jaco's solo spot during the S&L show I saw.. Some parts of it was cool but a lot of it just wasn't very interesting to me. My favorite part of his solo was when Jaco laid his Jazz Bass on the stage, face up (the bass, not Jaco
), while a repeating line was still going on from the MXR delay he was using. Then he walked around the back of his amps and got onto the drum riser, finally, jumping onto the bass to stop the repeating line, thereby ending the solo. That was Jaco at his finest! 
I never see much on his stint with Herbie Hancock, circa ‘75…maybe ‘76? I saw that tour. His star rose so fast…I became aware via the Metheny album, then there was a fairly obscure release with them and Paul Bley, with Bruce Ditmas. Alphonso was still with WR, the solo album hadn’t arrived yet(from what I remember). Still, Herbie gave him some solo space, he was no mere backing musician.
