The intro even kills me(right after the cool guitar part)...
F-F#-G-G#

There's a DVD to 'The Making of Aja. IIRC, Rainey demonstrated what Becker gave him...IIRC, it was a basic figure in "E".
The doublestops are so Rainey as are the little slapped/patted parts.

Actually IIRC the cool stuff (IMO the basic line) was actually written by Becker. Chuck demonstrated how a funk player at that time might have played it and then played what Becker wrote... including the F#-C# G-D fill.

Way, way back...a friend's band did "Josie" in "F". Ouch.
I wonder if they got it out of one of those "Easy Piano" book versions.*
A friend had a SD piano book and Josie was presented in Fm instead of the original Em.:eyebrow:

*......or it could have been a "badly out of adjustment" tape deck.

No, these guys were one hot band...this band's original bassist(Benny Bialy) was Jaco before Jaco, if you get my drift. ;)

I always assumed it was raised to "F" for the vocals. Coulda been a crappy '70s era cassette player.

Isn't there a story that Becker and Fagen didn't want Chuck to slap in Peg, but when they weren't looking, he slapped anyways.
Absolutely true! He tells the story in the making of Aja DVD. He said he turned sideways and ducked behind the baffle. They loved the part, but didn't catch he did the slap line until later. By the way, a great DVD to check out. Several of the musicians are in it, but it lacks comments from one of the major players, Steve Gadd.

Could be. I have a pretty good vocal range and I've raised songs that were already pretty high just because they felt better for me.

I'm afraid I'd have to whip out my bass capo.
I'm not above that. If Albert Collins could make a career out of the capo, why can't a bassist use one once in a while. I look at it like when a Billiards player has to use a "Jumper Stick/Granny Cue" to hit an awkward (too long to reach) shot. It's perfectly legit.

That's a sick little fill. How the Becker who wrote stuff like that and wore the mean Fu Man Chu turned into the safe little jazzbot playing guitar on the last two albums/tours is beyond me.

I guess that's the biggest reason not to chase the dragon- if you survive it, you turn bland. I never cared for cherry wine either.
