Joyo Orange Juice or Ultimate Drive for this sound?

Holiday time, and my son-in-law plays bass and guitar. He just got himself a decent bass.
He's striving for the bass sound - I/E, by Vultures At Arms Reach

Any ideas on a low budget (<$60, ideally) that would get him close?
I was thinking the Joyo Orange Juice or Ultimate Drive, but OD/Dist/Fuzz is not my area so I'm not up on this stuff.

That is a great bass tone!
Personally i'd recommend the Joyo American or British sounds to the OJ or UD (i've previously owned both). Much more versatile and better sounding pedals IMO. The OJ i found too hissy and immediately passed it on, the UD i moved to guitar duties as to my ears it sounds too thin on bass.

Stack two Joyo Ultimate Drives, $35 each. Set the Level to unity gain with his clean amp'd volume one at a time, then set Gain on one cleanish, right to the edge of break up and just a little past it, highs rolled off, lp switch in high. Then separately set the gain on the 2nd one high enough to just about add some actual gravel, readjust the level knob so he's back to his clean amp'd volume, roll the lows off just until he can hear some clank and string noise, lp switch in high. Then light em both up.

It won't quite sound like yr recording but he'll be so beguiled with the racket he's making he'll be squirrelled away in the garage for days. He can eventually mod them for more low frequency response w/the soldering station you get him for Xmas--

The latest Deluxe Big Muff Bass Pi is cheap used and has many knobs and blends clean signal in the fuzz parade.

But I'd say try to convince him to get a little spendy sooner than later and get a 2 channel preamp w/EQ, level and drive sections, that's got midrange frequency adjustment/selection, blend and DI. Maybe first, before jumping into the pedal parade. That way he can learn what clean tones he needs to morph into overdrive doom.

Electroharmonix Battalion is surprisingly cheap for what it is, the big one with like 14 knobs and 4 switches. There's also a better cheap one for a little more, it's Russian, the AMT Bass Crunch. Only thing missing on that one imo is pre-post eq selection but he'll likely take longer to outgrow it that the EHX.

Owning one myself I would think that the Joyo California Sound would probably be capable of getting in the ballpark of that.

I also own a Joyo Orange Juice, 2 even, but while it is an amazingly great pedal and got some of the same grind to it, it would be brighter and have a lot more bite to it, not as grunty, if that makes sense.

To get that tone i would say you would need to look for pedals that are in the fuzz-domain.
i think Joyo: Ultimate Drive is a good candidate, especially at that price.


What i also hear from that recording is that the bass strings are not high "tension sounding"
