Jule Amps Monique Part III

The rackmount and dove cage... Nice! So now I have to wait patiently for Jule to create his magic. Expected delivery mid June. Well as they say, you can't rush art!

So now I'm deciding on which power amp to get. The price of the IPR is attractive, but I'm probably going to go with the Crest pro-lite as suggested here because of the 5 yr warranty.

Thanks everyone for your help, as always. Everyone here at TB is always so helpful and constructive, probably because we are bass players! No ego's here..... That would be found in the guitar / Lead singer forums! LOL!

The double bassists that I'm aware of that use the Glockenklang BAC Head for Double Bass are Vincent (Vunz on TB, who also lives in the Netherlands) and John Goldsby (Chop_1992 of TB) of the WDR. You might want to ask them their opinions.

DB 750/751 seems like using a sledge hammer as a fly swatter, as far as use with DB is concerned - but you might like it.

I highly recommend the Crest ProLite with Monique ($359-ish) but the IPR1600 is $235 at GC. That is a great deal.

The IPR wouldn't be my first choice for heavy touring, but it is a good amp.

i think i remember reading back a bit that some guys were swapping the EZ81/6CA4 rectifier tube...i have a nos Mullard and RCA on the way and just curious as to the results that you guys have had with the swaps - what is the stock tube that comes from Jule

She ships with the well made Electro Harmonix 6CA4. Have not had a single failure. Earlier, we used the JJ and ended up having near 30% failure rate in initial 24 hour testing. In each failure, the filament in the 6CA4 would quit and the tube goes dark.

I reported this failure rate to a US JJ distributor about a year ago, but have heard of no subsequent improvements.

Even the venerable EZ80 (lower current capability than the EZ81) works quite well with Monique. If the EZ80 was still being manufactured it might be my preference. But it isn't so it isn't. ;)

I use a Mullard/GE that was NOS when I got it. I honestly can't give you a real comparative from the JJ that came with it because I also changed out the other tubes around the same time. I believe that Chadds CAN speak to it though. I think he finds the modern tubes to be a bit punchier and tighter in the rectifier position?

Since its going to be a while for Monique to arrive, I went ahead and jumped on the GC deal for the IPR. I'm just a weekend warrior so figure I take a spin with it. I figure I can try it with my current setup now, and return if needed. Plus I have plenty of time to perhaps land a good deal on the Crest Pro-lite (just missed one here not too long ago), even though the Pro-lite is priced very well.

Thans you for your reply. I'm aware of the fact some of the listed amps are overkill for DB. I do also plat elektic, which is why I asked.

I would have done the same thing at that price. That is a great power amp for the $$$.:hyper: It will sound killer!

Crest is owned by Peavey anyways..... and the ProLite and IPR are virtually the same amp.

I was gonna say....are there actual DB players that gig with these amps? Some of these are 40+ lb. tanks! I would pay good money to watch an upright player in NYC make that happen....I used to work for Aguilar and just moving a DB751 from the test shelf to the ship shelf was enough exercise for a week!

Yep, for Rectifier tubes the EH is the best with the JJ close behind, to me. The sag of the NOS RCA is applicable for some things. But for staccato punch, tightness and cleanliness I like the new stuff. YM could vary.:)

Cool and good to know - i am for sure looking for the clean and tight thing you described. I have a NOS Mullard in there now that has a bit to much sag. ill let you fellas know when the NOS RCA and EH get in there and have been tested out...

As far as the 6SL7s go the black plate RCA's have been killin it for me. Any other swaps for anyone else recently?

I am slightly embarrassed to say that the geek-iness of power supply design and implementation for musical electronics is intensely exciting only to the very strange. You really do not want to know.
