Jule Amps Monique Part III

When Monique was delivered I was puzzled that there is no effect send-return. Until I realized that feeding the effect (in my case Eventide Pitch Factor with build-in tuner) by the output is the same signal path as having a serial send-return. And while the Pitch Factor has it's own dry-wet-blend plus a tuner which function mutes the signal there is no need for anything else.

Personally I don't need a standby function either. I'm used to turn the volume down on my bass to be sure not to make any unwanted noise. And for the Monique is as quiet as a mouse ... you could think of it as an automatic mute. :)

However there is something I wish for: A two channel version to be able to switch from bg to upright.

I'm playing in a band where the setlist forces me to switch instruments every two or three songs. Therefore I have a Radial Firefly at the moment. And it's a shame to compromise so much on the tone just to be able to switch.

Have you thought about an A-B-Y box? It may be ideal for your situation, however that is how I get around switching between BG and EUB with my band - I use and an outboard preamp on my EUB with a level control to keep the piezo on the EUB levels consistent with the BG I am playing and then use the A-B-Y box to switch between instruments. I used to use a Radial ToneBone, but thought it colored the sound too much for me. Of course if you have different eq setup needs for your upright, this would not be an ideal solution.

Yeah, two Monique's and a line splitter would resolve that issue. :D

An A-B-Y box before the input cannot give good results because of the impedance differences between active BG and upright with Clevinger Natural Presence. Until now I haven't found a pre-amp that matches the impedance issue and equals the sound quality of the Monique. I used the Fishman pro-eq and the Radial PZ-pre for year's but now I'm used to the Monique I cannot live with the poor (kinda dull) sound quality of these other pre's any more. Now the Firefly is kinda acceptable.

Thought about two Monique's and and the Little Lehle II before the power-amp.

Most gigs I'm using one of my pedal boards so I've got a tuner - mute and tuning covered there. On occasion I do plug straight in and in that case I go back to my old school habits of pulling the cable out halfway at the input jack when I need to swap basses.

If/when a mythical tube power section appears I assume that will have a standby switch. Best of all worlds :D

Well I haven't pulled the trigger on the Monique yet - I have a little bit of gear to get rid of before that happens - but it's at the top of my list.

The A-B-Y box works for me - I'm using a Fishman BII - the output of the EUB goes right into that (it has a 10 MOhm input), and the output of the Fishman into the A-B-Y box, plus my BG into the A-B-Y box as well. I control the level of the EUB to match the level of the BG with volume control on the Fishman - so the levels going into the amp match (or are at least very close) - I typically don't need to change the eq on the amp for the EUB either (I only use it playing classic country), so this solution works well for me, but I certainly understand why it wouldn't be for everyone.

While I agree Monique could use a mute function, I def don't agree about having 2 channels. The EQ is SO simple and easy to use, is it really THAT difficult to switch basses on the fly and find your sound? If anything, it would now clutter up the simple aesthetic of Monique, IMO. As far as the mute function, it would certainly help those with active basses who don't wish to leave their 1/4" left plugged into the bass (draws power from batteries in onboard pre) yet aren't looking to make a crazy popping noise in the house from the DI out to the board. I usually just pull the 1/4" inch out from Monique first, but obv a mute feature would solve this problem completely.

Hey! I loved those knobs.:hyper:

I wouldn't likely love them as much if I had to get them fixed out of warranty though!

In any case, Monique is so simple to use, it isn't an issue for me to play 2 completely different output basses and just move a few settings on the amp between songs.

Yeah they are innovative, but I worry about them breaking down. I personally think a true two-channel amp is a better solution.

Not advocating for or against a two-channel Monique.

It isn't that difficult. It is impossible when there is less than a second switching time inbetween songs. And it's pretty annoying when everyone is waiting for the bass-player to be ready. Or missing the first notes...

I always can buy a second or 2 a few times a gig. Also, if I need to greatly change EQ for a few songs, I will put them all together so I only adjust once in a set.

Generally, I use a SansAmp Bass Driver Programmable as it has 3 presets. I have it set for clean boost, slap and heavy distortion so I don't really need to touch Monique.

If I really need to adjust Monique a lot (one gig in the last 6 months), I bring 2 Moniques and a Radial ABY. Not the best solution costwise.
