Jule Amps Monique Part III

Just got in contact with Jule about ordering a Monique to Europe and I'm beginning to feel that this is something I should really get.
I'm a doubler, and I'm planing to use the Monique for both electric and upright with my TC115. I'm wondering if any of you have used the FDeck hpf/pre between your piezzo and monique ? How does it work for you ? I have it ( version III ) and love it and I hope it's a good match here. It would also help with switching the instrument, since you can just turn the FDeck volume to zero...

It's crazy: I just got a REDDI a few days ago to try it out for a week. The same day I got it I came across the Monique here on TB and it just seems so much more versatile and practical.

Btw, has anyone used LMIII as the poweramp ? I think I'll have to decide between that combo or selling the LM and buying the Minnie 800D which seems to be really a great match.

I don't do piezo, but I do use a Monique and an HPF3. I've had not problems with running it either in front of the Monique or in between the Monique and a power amp (although you may have to be careful with your gain staging if you put it between).

I ended up with the unintended benefit when running it between pre and power amps that I had WAY more level than without it inserted, probably due to some impedance matching between the power amp and the fdeck unit. I have spoken with one other person who had the same result.

I also have run my monique into my LMII on occasion, by running it into the effects return and had no difficulties and it performed as intended. Make sure you 'flatten' the tone controls for the LMIII, as I believe the effects loop is in parallel.

I love Jule's stuff and own 3 of his amps, but I would not buy a Minnie when I can get a great 1000-2000w <10lb poweramp for under $400. My Crown and Crest poweramps sound amazing with Monique and were less than 1/2 the price of a Minnie.

Minnie looks great and has a small footprint.... but to me that isn't worth an additional $500-700. YMMV.:)

James Demeter makes really nice stuff, and it seems to be in the same price-scale as most of his work. If you want what amounts to a ‘custom’ power amp designed to match the tech spec of the Monique with the convenience and form factor of the crab-cage version of the preamp, then I have no doubt that its worth the money. I also believe that there are many viable options in the power amp world that work very well too.

for what it's worth, using the monique as the preamp, nostatic and i compared the power section in the puma 900 to the minnie, with numerous back-and-forths. the minnie was clearly different. i would probably say "better." richer and smoother sounding. surprising to both of us as we did not expect such a big difference (really any difference).

The De-Monique is the merging of two best in class technologies. For some, the form factor justifies its price. It's a pretty impressive package. I was thinking of flipping my GB Shuttle Max 9.2 for a Puma 900 but hearing it sits on the bench when Monique is around makes me wonder. I'd love to hear a De-Monique next to my Streamliner 900. I like that amp a lot but know there are some that have upgraded from the Streamliner and really enjoyed the sound and feel of Monique. 800-900 watts at 4 ohms provides plenty of headroom for a pair of Baer ML-112's or an Xsonics 2155CF cab.

Totally agreed.

James Demeter is a great resource for us all. I like saying that because it is true. I value him as a friend, and as someone to "bounce ideas off of." Probably way too often, I use/abuse him by sharing my mental meanderings and gathering his bits of wisdom.

James' work on the 800-D Minnie as it applies to Monique was not simplistic. The Minnie was from inception designed to take advantage of textures and features of Monique as Monique does of the Minnie. It is a pretty cool symbiosis.

That does not mean there aren't other great amp combinations. There certainly are. Not long ago a player told me they enjoyed playing Monique through a 1000 watt car amplifier. As long as it is fun . . .

When comparing apples to apples, a poweramp is basically a poweramp IME/IMO.

Maybe my ears are shot but a $5000+ all tube McIntosh, a 12x6L6 tube Mesa with the pre bypassed and other amps and poweramps all sound very close behind Monique to me.

Minnie looks cool, matches Monique, is light and Demeter builds solid gear. Beyond that.... Sorry, I just don't get it.

P.S. I think Foderas are worth the extra $$$ over other similar basses which many may think is mental.

We all have a different view on value/worth on a given item, I guess.

P.s. I have huge respect for guys like Steubig and Nostatic, but I really don't generally notice big differences between different poweramps.

For me, form factor is a major consideration. Minnie slips into an existing bag and I have a small footprint. I hate racks - personal bias. So with 100+ load in/out a year, that size difference is worth the extra money to me. For others who like racks and/or are doing heavy traveling I understand a preference for that solution. Luckily Jule builds a variety of form factors so we get a choice.

I have noticed differences going thur effect loops on some amp vs. a straight up power amp. My 400+ sounded par with the Carvin and Crest. I have had slightly less preformance with certian SS bass amps. Effects loops are the last option I like using for that reason.

If I could talk James out of more than the one I have in my shop I'd send one North. He is doing a good job of keeping up now that he knows better what to expect, but they are still on back order.
