Pulled the trigger on a Rack Mount! Now the wait begins. I am going to run it into effects return on either my Streamliner 900 or Walter Woods ultra hi power.

Nice! I'm interested in hearing what everyone says once they get a chance to play it fer a while!

Mine is slated to arrive for round two today. :) I also have some interesting tubes that should arrive this week as either backups or tone options. A set of Russian 1950's 6SL7's, and two JAN Western Electrics, one an RCA, one a Sylvania... Both supposedly from the 40's. Oh, and one GE branded Mullard rectifier.

Hey Jule, speaking of such things, I started a thread about 6SL7's for those with Moniques, and/or other 6SL7 based amps. If you have any wisdom for it, since you've got way more insight and experience: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f15/lets-talk-about-6sl7-tubes-893791/

Also, a question came up about the RCA red-base military 5691/6SL7 any insight into if this is viable in a Monique from a technical standpoint?

I'm really interested in trying these:

If microphonics are an overreaching issue for 6SL7's then having a tube with good 'structure' appeals to me. These are triple mica spacers with additional stiffening rods.

I also have a set of RCA 5751 black plates with very similar structure (extra rods, triple mica) that sound really nice in a few settings, my Kern, my Vibrochamp, and even my Twin.

Despite being pricey, they are great tubes. With a 10,000 hour life, you can play about 10 hours a week for 20 years!

The one drawback of this tube is that the nominal heater current is 0.6A as compared to 0.3A for a regular 6SL7GT. So your power supply will have to be capable of providing the necessary heater current.

Eh?

Monique can handle up to 2 Amps of heater current. Doubling the current draw with the 5691 is going to be pushing it. I'd expect a drop in performance.

Any suggestions for another similarly ruggedized tube that specs a bit better? I'm sure that the stock tubes are just fine, but you know me...can't leave well enough alone!

When I can find JAN (Joint Army Navy) 6SL7 tubes that are not micro-phonic I grab them. Pretty robust smooth gain, and not focused on the high-end. I still prefer the Shuguang 6SL7 tubes for musical tone that is very consistent.

In the amplifier recording world, I have customers with quivers of tubes for different sounds. That may sound crazy, but we are making music - whatever works.

Cool, then the 'oops' purchase of the Sylvania & GE JAN tubes I made last night could be a good thing. I low balled 20 bucks on them and didn't think I'd get them, still in their stock military white-boxes, and reportedly testing more than good.

Metron, what are you plugging Monique into?

For now just the effect return on my Walkabout. I have my band pa in the basement but it's not set up.

Also, howzabout a quick rundown of what you think and your impressions of Monique's tone? :) I gotta live on something until I get out and play tonight.

Well I don't know how much plugging into the return on the Walkabout makes it sound Walkabout-ish but... it kinda does! I AB'd the WA and the Monique trying to match the gain with everything set to noon, only adjusting sensitivity. We all know the Walkabout. In general the Monique sounded a little fatter or thicker with roughly equal midrange complexity and slightly less top end (depending on where sensitivity is, slightly more). I haven't had a chance to use the eq much but first impressions are that they are very powerful and not really interactive, as has been said. This pre has a LOT of boost/cut. Isn't it +-20 dB for each?!?

It's a lovely tone. Hefty notes. Interesting mids. Plenty of treble eq to boost into sheen territory or to cut it back to sound like thick molasses. I particularly liked playing my 55-94 fretless through the Monique. It seems that the sensitivity dial can do a lot for the dynamics of a fretless. I can't wait to run it into the pa! :D
