Jule Amps Monique

Dang, just looked up the Thumpinator pedals, and apparently they don't cut above 5k. I need that way more than cutting subsonics.

I can cut stuff above 5k from my bass, and/or roll it off from the amp. :) Not only that, we have different gigs, and different tonal and volume needs. From what I gather, you'd get thrown out of your gig for even half the volume or even practice volume I use on a regular basis. I also do enjoy a nudge at the bass control, nothing extreme, but a lil' bit of extra lovin' none the less.

I don't question the Monique's design or why/how it does what it does. The best amps, cabs, gear in general do what they do unapologetically, and its that character that means EVERYTHING.

While I was rolling I started hearing this chicken frying sound. Sometimes when playing sometimes just at idle.

I did this rolling in a scientific way one area at a time to hear the changes. Thought this crispy crackle was from the 6SL7s cause that was the first change. Swapped back to Sovteks then even turned on a different amp to make sure it wasn't some line noise. After those storms anything is possible.

It was the EH 12at7. Think it new it was going to be replaced? :)

The JJ ri and the RCA rectifier are similar in that they deliver feel rather than sound.

The whole complement of RCAs feels very strong and sounds very musical.

12AT7? Not 12AU7? Just making sure...

I don't want to get off topic of the Monique, but why is it you want to cut above 5k? Tweeter protection? Or "static" interference?

I don't want/need anything up past that in my tone. I play bass in a reggae band. It would sound pretty funny if I had some 10K happening wouldn't it? ;)

I think the HPF makes sense in regards to filtering out subsonic content to increase headroom and minimize speaker excursion for notes that can't be heard anyways.

Exactly. for a lot of guys who don't emphasize the lows or who won't be boosting the lows it's a non-issue. :) I don't have ANY problem with the Monique and what it does down low, but for my particular use, having a HPF judiciously applied is not a bad thing.

Many guys here may not even realize that their standard bass amps have an integrated high pass, or at least some form of low end roll off and filtering in their amps. For many old tube amps, the output stage has a natural deep low roll off that we don't find in modern solid state power amps. I wouldn't have known this unless much more knowledgeable folks hadn't mentioned it. So if you're playing a tube amp, it's already rolling off the deep lows...which is another reason that a lot of other guys in this discussion may not think they need one.

The Monique is a tube front end that's taken some cues from a variety of high-quality tube amp front ends along with its own design characteristics, but without the roll off that a tube/transformer power stage would give.

:)

Still waiting on that review you promised: "I'll have a full review up in a few days or so on ma website (hondobass.com). All I can say now is holy $h!t this thing sounds more hefty than ever!"

Used the Monique on a gig last night at a medium sized club. Sounded FAAAAAANTASTIC. Warm, deep, loud, and clear! I was playing Afro-Cuban stuff most of the night, and I was running the sens at about noon. I rolled it back a bit and it made a serious difference in mix. It's like a "warmth/grit" knob but with no loss of articulation. As I rolled it back, the "tube"-ness seemed to back off and let more of the poignant rounded edge creep back into the tone. Just awesome...

In other news: I will be switching to a new power amp (CA6) and cab (Aggie DB410) set-up soon. If anyone is interested, I will report back on how it performs.

Man! You're really holding me to that aren't you? I didn't think anyone was paying attention... :o

I'm actually holding off on it for a bit until I can get some equipment to add audio/video to my written reviews. After seeing some great sounding reviews done with an Apogee Duet interface, I think I'm going to use that for audio simplicity...problem is its 600 bucks and I want a second Monique too:ninja: Please bear with me in the meantime :atoz: :help: You guys will be the first to know when the review is finished!

A 2nd Monique???!!!:hmm::rollno::ninja::scowl:
I don't think I understand.

I don't like frequencies above 5k. That's the point between good sounding highs and annoying sounding highs as far as I'm concerned. Plus it keeps PA's from blowing tweeters when you run overdrive.

On another note, the Russian TUNG SOL 6SL7 is now in the shop. Several are already on continuous test cycle to see what happens over time but they are obviously manufactured to a higher standard than others I have seen.

Are you saying the other "New Sensor" tubes or even better than the Chinese Shuguang tubes as well?

Hey there.

Jule would alternate between the 12AT7 and the 12AU7 choosing the best match for that unit. Now he's using the 12AU7 as the Cinemag transformer is the greater determinant of tone than the tube in this case.

Cool. Just wondering. :) I know that mine was an AU7 and didn't know if there were changes along the way or something else. For the general public who may have one or be looking at one it's nice to have definitive info here.

No. Not yet. There is a musical quality and consistency to the Shuguangs that is very appropriate for what we are doing. Also, I can take advantage of the metal base for shielding.

Since I (after a year of zero failures) received some Shuguangs that failed in transit, alternatives seemed appropriate. It is time to check out the highly touted Tung Sols.

My reference to apparent quality has to do with the visually apparent mechanical differences between the EH and Tung Sols. Different phenolic (not plastic) base that is perfectly aligned in all cases. Also an obvious internal symmetry that is occasionally missing in the EHs.

In the Shuguang world, I've never seen any with obvious mechanical mis-alignment. I would put the Tung Sols and the Shuguangs in the same level of mechanical standards.

As to what they sound and play like, that will take time to determine.

Thanks Jule, that's in line with conversations that we've had in the past. I was just wondering if the tubes that New Sensor sent you were a different issue/version from what you've seen in the past...if they'd recently refined and upgraded their product.

Definitely not the usual EH.
