Jule Amps Monique

I was gonna say, that I didn't think you really played bass, Jule. :bawl:

I'll also comment that often I have a hard time, because I like the sound of the Monique with the Sensitivity rolled back to just before noon, but I also like it turned up to about 2 o'clock. :crying: They both sound good and the guys in the band won't let me put songs in the set twice so I can do it both ways.

Just finished the fEARful last week & received Monique yesterday.

I've been playing through an Eden rig for close to 5 years now, and this entire rig is CLEAR. Omg. All of the highs, lows, harmonics etc are present and balanced.

I'm still getting used to Monique and the rig in general obviously, but the sheer clarity and depth of the sound over all is extremely impressive to be. The preamp is yes warm, and the Sensitivity knob adds a lot of harmonic content.

I've yet to get much growl out of the pre-amp, but i'm sure i'll find some sweet spots on her yet ;)

I might have missed it, but what basses are you playing currently? A MIM fender 5er? Also, I can't see if the Monique is attached to a full amp or just a poweramp in the pic. How are you running it?

Although it's an active pre, the output is very comparable to a passive bass unless I boost all the 3-bands. That being said, maybe I need a hotter signal to get the growl out of the pre

I'm assuming you've already tried turning up the sensitivity and pulling the knob out for the 4db boost?

I'm using nordstrand MMs and even with the coils split into a J-ish sound I can get some good growl going on...a TON if I really dig in, play with a pick, dime it, or pull the sens knob out :bassist:

It highly depends on How hot the pre is in your Bass?I have a Sadowsky Will Lee and I had to lower the gain on the Sadowsky because the signal was so hot from the Sadowsky even with the Sens all the way CCW it overloaded Monique with the growl like a over drive tube amp. This is easier to do on a Bass that have Trimpots internally which adjusts the amount of gain the bass puts out but there are only a few bass that I know have this.Fodera,Sadowsky Will Lee and I believe MTD,s?

Yep. Its all about driving that input. I'd definitely suggest that anyone who wants 'growl' should be pulling the Sensitivity control to get the hottest signal to hit the input then obviously cranking that sensitivity knob a bit. I'd also push that EQ a bit, especially in the mids and see if that does it for you.

If I really want SVT style breakup, then I run my bass' pickups in series for a hotter low mid emphasized signal then run the +4 with a hefty amount of Sensitivity control. I don't think you'll ever get it to distortionland, but definitely into the 'hot driven vintage tube' territory.

I had a great experience with Monique! I am a Santa Cruz local, so I had the pleasure of borrowing a rack mount from Jule for a couple weeks. I got to play through it on three gigs. My band loved the sound! I was running Monique through my Walter Woods Electacoustic Ultra and Baer 112's unbelievable sound. Needless to say, mine is on order now!

Cool! I love mine too. I'm looking forward to our late summer/fall gigging schedule getting busy, so I can spend more time on stage with mine. I've also been running regular recordings of rehearsals, and love how big and wide yet punchy the preamp is. The DI really has some serious low extension mojo going on.

I definitely played with the Sensitivity knob and the majority of the time had it pulled out. Tonight if I get the chance i'll try boosting the signal with my EP booster before I hit the Pre. I'm pretty sure that'd do the trick :hyper:

Also, not all 6SL7's are created equal. I noted once (when my unit was having problems and I was testing different tubes to see if that was the issue) that the vintage Tung Sol I tried out in it (V1)seemed to have a good amount more gain than any of the others. Someone I trust confirmed that indeed the 'old' Tung Sols can and usually do provide more gain.

If the boost pedal doesn't rectify the situation i'll definitely look into the tube thang.

I actually hope the boost gives me the break-up i'm looking for.. because that means I could use the boost selectively in parts and songs I want the break-up to be in.

Don't be afraid to raise the EQ levels for a bit of a boost on the growl side too. It is not an idea (EQ for gain) we are used to, but it can be fun and useful. You have about 20db of gain (frequency specific) in each of those EQ knobs. All together that is probably a silly amount, but it is there.

By example, if all three knobs are rolled to the right together, we are raising the gain and level of our "flat" spot. Rolling the Low full clockwise still doesn't result in mush - just thunder.

Amen to that.

I've found that peaking the mids (something I HATE doing w/ mot set-ups) sounds great for a boost in that bite-y/gnarly tone range. Like I said in my review, one of the greatest things about Monique is that you can't make her sound bad even if you dime any/all of the EQ.

I guess I was under the assumption that Boosting the eq wouldn't provide a tube type growl, and that I would have to hit the pre hard initially to achieve the sound. Needless to say, I have a lot of experimenting to do haha

I feel a bit bad that there is much in Monique that is different from what all of us have played in the past. It really is a "learning curve" situation.

The only time this configuration of a "Sensitivity" knob was available to bass players before was in the short lived Matchless Bass Amp. The short life of the Matchless Bass Amp had much to do with the guitar focus of Matchless Amps (and some other things). It is unusual to be able to change both the impedance and gain of any front end with one knob. The original idea was not mine. It came from my friend/astounding tube engineer/former Drag Race engine mechanic, Mark Sampson.

The Baxandall EQ is "strange" to us too, since it is not a parametric, and it is not an interactive EQ (as in most amps). The tone shaping that can be done with those three knobs as it pertains to gain/level/frequency is pretty dramatic - and not the norm.

She is not "normal" but I sure hope she is fun. ;)
