You are a hard travelin' man Mitch. Isn't it about two years you've been out there touring with Monique?

Get her in to me (if you ever slow down) and I'll get her back up to speed.

Congratulations on all the hard work.

yep. started bringing my Monique (metal) around on fly dates with me in it's little road case but I think just from carrying it around at so many airports with it bangin around in it's case the 6SL7s developed some serious microphonics and it just won't stop ringing now. Keep it at home! haha

thanks Jule! Indeed it's been a while already and Monique has been working almost as hard! haha....I try not to take her out of NYC unless I'm handling some of my own equipment (I just don't trust anybody!) but I've been meaning to send her your way for a while....I just bought a bunch of NOS tubes for her so maybe when they arrive I'll get a chance to send her over. You're the man Jule....so pleased to see your passion taking off!

Ok...just for fun. I've been recording some of our practices, and here's a few from last week of us goofing around. Please note, that this isn't a polished recording, just us jamming and running tunes...and pretty rusty on my part without much regular practice time right now! :crying:

I've got the Mid up to about 3 o'clock, the treble rolled at about 9 o'clock, and the Bass left at noon. There is still some roll off on the treble on my bass, and dead strings happening. The recording has no EQ adjustments or other editing of any kind:

This one's a bit more traditional, some boosted bass, Mid set at noon and the treble rolled off to 9 o'clock:

And one more. Us playing offa the old soul classic Use Me. This one's got me running my bass without any attenuation on the highs, and them set around 10 o'clock on the Monique. Bass flat, and mid at about 3 o'clock, or boosted a fair amount:

cool....I like the middle one!

I cracked open my Monique yesterday and swapped out the 6SL7s with a NOS pair of early 60s GE 6SL7GTs and replaced the rectifier with a NOS Tesla EZ81. Bought an old NOS RCA 12AU7 for whenever I get my Monique to Jule for the upgrade but damn this thing already sounds SO much better! The microphonic ringing is gone thank god, and there's absolutely a sweeter high end as well as a little more punch to the lows. Been playing my Fodera Imperial in passive mode through it with the lows almost at 3 o'clock, the mids at 2 o'clock and the highs a little past noon. Perfect is all I can say. Like a thick old Fender with the perfect amount of clarity and articulation. I've got a couple of studio sessions with her coming up, I'll try to get some clips up!

This is such a precise Bass tone. But huge. I am in awe.

Wish I could catch you guys live. And your lady singer reminds me of some James Brown vocalists. Very cool.

I'm way beyond the "dread" on top, but I'm hoping I can get the beard long enough.

Thanks Jule!

The tone has way more punch and precision than I could get from my Kern, without the Monique turning 'non musical'. I really felt like I had been missing that from our live and recorded sound. Again, the tracks (really rough live practice recordings) are pretty 'as is', especially the bass, which has no additional EQ, dynamics effects, or anything.

I've been 'playing' with my tone controls on the Monique to continue to better my understanding of what works for me and what I can do with them. Lately, I've been enjoying the mid turned up a good bit (about 2 to 3 o'clock). And now with the integration of the new fdeck HPF-3 in between the Monique and the power amp I feel like I'm in a good place. I can boost the bass EQ however much I want, then the HPF keeps the stuff lower than 35hz out of the amp and speakers. Its a neat little trick...keeping the tube harmonics that the Monique excels in adding, but getting rid of un-useful subsonics. It effectively curbs the 'shelf' at 35hz...but it doesn't sound like you're missing any of your deep low content, and the room doesn't rattle as much at volume, nor do your speakers try to jump out of their frames with the bass boosted heftily.

I have to portion out credit for my tone to several guys...Jule Potter, Dave Green, and Sheldon Dingwall. Having a 37" B string, 36.5ish E string keeps things focused tremendously. Dave's speakers are just the thing to reproduce what I want cleanly, clearly, and loudly. The Monique provides so much tonal content that its now a big part of the equation.

...and now, back to the woodshed. Time for me to get some chops back...a summer of big life changes and loads of work has made for close to no home practice time. I need to feel like a bass player again!

Us Canadians are lazy!:p Sheldon included.;)

He must be an expat, then because I would never peg him as lazy. :spit:

He's the hardest working Canadian in lutherie, as far as I can tell! I made a bad move to order in the October before the original Super-J went 'public' and I didn't help matters by doing my best to push the release as hard as I could either. :crying: The quoted 8 month wait for a custom Z went from under a year to 2 years, to 3 years! Along the way, my bass changed a lot as Sheldon thought about it and we brainstormed some fun ideas, so the end product was pretty awesome.

'skies! Real Nice Real Nice!

Thanks Chadds,

I have to be honest that I'm a bit mortified that I put out such warty tracks for all to hear. But at the same time, I had promised some samples...and over at the fEARful board I posted stuff the week before that was a bit more rootsy and I had my tone set a bit more traditionally deep lows less mid/high ...and some of the reg'lers there (Foz, I think, and others) asked if I could post something with more mid content and upper range stuff (although I still have the treble rolled off to 9 o'clock).

He is a great dude. I have talked to him many times.

Your Rastaburst would be worth any wait though!
