jumping into the effects world

so i am pretty sure that i am going to get an overdrive pedal. specifically a fulltone bass drive. besides another instrument cable. would i need a power supply?

About $180, plus or minus about fifteen. The Fulltone adapter is about $18, but it has a long lead time.

it's better to not exagerate with cable lengths, I'd say

you don't need the fulltone PSU, any 9V with center-mass will be fine especially if you have only one pedal!

Jumping into effects, is there a base effects setup that would be recommended? Say a compressor, etc?

Personally, I'd get a multi-effects pedal. It's a good way to learn and hear how all the effects generally work and then you can upgrade to individual effects you take a liking to.

I would recommend doing a lot of research here on talkbass and buying smart, over the multi-effect route. Between the user reviews and clips posted, you can get a really good idea what you are getting into. That's what has worked for me at least.

As far as a base setup.. I think dirt (fuzz, OD, distortion) and modulation (chorus, phaser, flange) are two types of effects that will work in most any environment. Without knowing what kind of sounds you are going for, I would recommend starting with those two and doing lots of reading here on talkbass.

Well, I've got a Zoom B2.1u.

Problem is I wanted to learn how to build my own patches to get the sound I want, and looking at the order that most would do it gives me an idea how to build for the sound I'm looking for.

Plus I thought it might be good as a jumping off point for an intro to effects.
