Just bought a Mesa Boogie M3.

Interesting. I don't have a circuit diagram but I'd guess the voice switch at "neutral" (pos'n 3) on the M6 or 9 would sound the same as the M3 with all controls flat. I tried an M3 and thought it sounded like the 6 and 9, but I didn't A/B them.
Did you A/B 'em in the store?

Yes, side by side, through the same cab, (an Aggie DB210 which I also bought). At first, I was just going to buy the M6, but my buddy who works at the GC, said, "chheck out this M3" yada blah yada, and sure enough- now, this is NOT to say that the M6 and M9 aren't awesome sounding amps- but yeah, the M3 has the edge tonally.

I'm just surprised they actually sound different at all:p. I had read other reviews saying the 6 and 9 sounded alike when run flat. I realize these things are hard to describe, but how did it sound different?

Well, tubes are supposed to sound their best when being pushed right? I doubt most people will gig or jam in a room where they have to push a 600W amp to the max. 300W's more likely.

Also, what I like about the M3 is that it's only got 4 knobs for tone control. That's all I need, my Bongo can handle the rest :D
