Check out this video, at least the first 3 minutes.... Hadrien Feraud Best Bass Solos - YouTube

I am sure he is old hat to many of you, but I have only just become aware of Hadrien. I am blown away by how easy he makes everything he is doing look, how relaxed he is, and how much fun he is having, while completely kickin A**. Jeff Berlin described him as being the "fastest player ever" and that is a pretty hefty compliment as Jeff Berlins usually only compliments himself! Amazing chops here, and also great note choices, harmonic content and variety. A great solo indeed.

(FYI, you are not allowed to post comments like "that is just flashy chops with no emotional content" until you post your own video doing better, or post a video that shows what you are talking about. People who make comments like this remind me of the geniuses who criticize Coltrane for being "flashy" or playing "too many notes")

I dig it. It's funny how for the first 20 seconds my ears kinda resisted because they were trying to pick out each note as it went by...and then they latched onto what everybody else was doing, especially the drummer, and I went, "...Oh!" It's fast, but tasteful too.

The interplay with the drummer is awesome. I wish I would get to jam with that drummer.

should i submit a video of me warming up before i tell you how boring that solo was? :hiding:

it was kinda okay,... maybe more color and nuiance, with some Fender jazz growl would catch my interest more. and Jeff should know better than to compliment someone on their speed. if he couldn't say something more sincere, he should've said nothing.
(i see what he really did there)

Q: so Jeff,.. what did you think of that guy's playing?

A: well,... he's the fastest guy in the world.
(which isn't even true) we all know that Victor can play figure 8's around this guy!!! :bassist: as well,... Vic, Stanley, or Jaco could take that same solo and make it hella sexy.
YMMV, IMHO, etc.

That's just flashy chops with no emotional content. There you go. I would disappoint a lot of people on this forum if they knew how I felt about Wooten, Stanley, Geddy Lee, etc. They're not my favorites, nor do I think they're the best. I don't know, it's just my opinion.

Just a reminder (to myself mostly) that whenever I start to think I am the shiznit, that there are armies of guys out there who can take me to school. I see videos like this, or the Pattituci one in particular, and even some great clips of your own playing that I have seen, and I am going "damn I need to practice more!"

I fully understand where you're coming from but sometimes it's not about feeling the need to practice more simply because you may feel that a certain player is much better than you or what their doing looks cooler than anything that you may come up with from within yourself.

Sometimes it's just about being yourself and that can be a bigger influence or inspiration than feeling the need to beat ones self up over thinking another player is so much better.


And I appreciate you taking the time to check out some of my video's.

I think it's ok for someone to give an opinion that this style doesn't speak to them. I love Coltrane, but I get why people wouldn't like him. For sure, Feraud and Berlin do things that I could probably never do, and I respect it, but they don't really do anything for me.

I get you! When I am performing I don't worry about this stuff, but simply reach down and try to pull out whatever is in there. However, if we stop being inspired by the amazing players out there, and stop trying to learn from them, then I feel our own growth is going to limited. For me it is not a matter of beating myself up saying "I suck" but more about, wow, I wish I had total command of jazz harmony like Pattituci or chops like Hadrien.

I guess what I am saying is that I am not that interested in comments from people who don't like these videos simply because they don't like, or get, jazz. If one has specific items to bring up, such as note choice, or tone, or rhythm issues that is cool, but so many times I see very negative comments about great players simply because the person comments ONLY likes rock, or country, or whatever and has a closed mind to instrumental music. As a general rule, bass solo albums aren't what I listen to all day either. I consider some of Jaco's best work to be the stuff he did with Joni Mitchell. However, every now and then it is nice to bask in the glow of some amazing playing!

I hear ya. Giving constructive criticism could help people understand why something wouldn't be appreciated, and could actually make us better musicians. "Berlin sux, Cliff Burton's the best" comments don't do much for anyone :(

Don't get me wrong, I think being inspired by another player and wanting to be a better player is a big + to say the least. But I see a lot of players getting caught up in their favorite player and suddenly they stop growing and not even realize it(more often than not).
