Just ordered Alumitone BassBars

Has anyone here tried the Alumitone P pickup yet? I'm going to be putting a bass together soon and want a P pickup in it. If you've tried one, does it still sound like a P pickup? They're a bit expensive to take a chance on without some idea of what I'm likely to get.

I know there are probably some places on line where they've been recorded and I could listen, but I've never yet heard one of those where I liked the sound. Usually it's all way too bright roundwounds and too much slapping.

You may check the Lace website or youtube for soundclips. Seems as though I've seen them somewhere.

Just listened to the above referenced clip, and the Dimarzio is the clear winner! Of course there are so many factors that determine tone, strings, fingerboard, bridge, etc. The lace pickups may be perfect in the OP's bass. I like the midrange attitude of the Dimarzio which to me is a rock n roll tone. The lace pickup is too polite (I have always felt this about lace pickups-too nice!)

Thanks for that. Not much of a P bass sound. I think I'd like my usual Seymour Duncans better for a nice sounding P. I had the Dimarzio in before on my 78 P and it was good, but I liked the Duncan QP better using Thomastic flats.

There is a youtube clip in there with a demo of the alumitone P which i think sounds better than the other clip. I think it is a great sounding pickup, but I ended up going with the Model P due to its strong mids. I did a lot of searching/research before i decided on my choice, but it was the sound of the Model P that one me over....

Good Luck

Alright, so the saga has ended, but not the way I expected.

I sent the defective pickup back to Lace about a week or two ago, but haven't head much since. I ended up cancelling my order. Bruce at Aamp's was a class act the whole way through. His step-mom is having some health issues, so for those so inclined, please send thoughts and prayers his way.

Just sent payment for a set of SGD pickups. Really excited to throw these into the Ibby!!

Let me say that Im an Aluma P user, a very happy one, the sound is punchy, HUUUGE, and open... a nice mix between classic P tone and modern feel, no regret here.

I bought it at Aamps, great comunication, BUT as NicJimBass says, there are some issues with the alumitone suppy from LACE don't know what, hope they can fix that, great product more people should be using it

I just hooked up my Aluma P in a Warmoth Deluxe 5 P and I'm very impressed. I used a .022 mf cap and it sounds pretty smooth with the tone turned down, but I wouldn't call it vintage P sound. When the tone is up it has a lot of sizzle as mentioned, a much more modern tone. It has all the frequencies, plus really quiet which gives a lot of EQ potential. I haven't tried with any flats yet....not sure what is going on with them (Lace?) though.

I just installed some in my CV 60's P bass. My Fender 62 R.I. took a dump after a year and half. These pickups are awesome. I like em much better than the Fender RI that I have. Much more thump to me. I would highly recommend em. I do have flats on mine also.

Thanks. I was out today looking around at the rather pitiful selection of bass pickups in the Hamilton music stores. I asked if they could get Alumitones in one place. The guy said he didn't know but call him Monday. I know there is a store or some sort of supplier in Vancouver who claim to sell them, but the Alumitones are never in stock and they don't know when more will arrive. I think I'd have better luck in music stores in Afghanistan.

But thanks for letting me know about the sound with flats. I'd like a set if I could get one. Have my Carvin BK4 body all routed out now for a P pickup and I'm anxious to get started.
