I think you are in the clear on the "wasn't our intention" grounds.
A slight derail -
If there is a switch in instruments, is it still a split-and-reform? If the band is a hobby for the members, is the split-and-reform still douchy?
I started playing with a couple of guys who weren't totally happy in their situation. There were 3 guitarists playing guitar in their band and 1 guitarist (the best of the lot) was playing bass.
The reluctant bassist, drummer, rhythm guitarist/singer and horn player, reformed with me on bass. It was a combination of addition by subtraction (IMHO, 3 guitars only works if they are all pro-level and play well with others - now we are down to 2) and addition by addition - the reluctant bassplayer now can play the instrument that he excells at and he can now sing which he didn't did do in the other band.
