Justin Chancellor's Setup

There have been enough eyewitnesses at various shows as well as audio confirmation/general info to know.

He hasn't used a Rick live, period.

Maybe not in Tool, but I actually have a bootleg VHS of Tool playing in England way back on the Undertow tour, when Peach was opening up for them, and for whatever reason they have Justin come out and play bass on "Sober." And he's playing a Ric, which is what I think Justin used pre-Tool.

Now here's a question. For those of us who really love Justin's bass tone but can't afford a Wal, what other kind of bass gets at least close to that tone?

You could get a Fender Jazz Bass, replace the pickups with Dark Star, and put in 1M pots rather than the 125k Fender stock pots. That would get a tone similar to JC's. And what type of Ric was it? Was it Paul's, the banana yellow 4001cs?

I'm afraid that's impossible because Bassmingo has told us all "the man has never played a rick in public in his life!" and Tbirdbassist has told us "There have been enough eyewitnesses at various shows as well as audio confirmation/general info to know. He hasn't used a Rick live, period."
You see, these guys are the authorities. They are so into JC/Tool and studied the subject so intensely that they know what instrument Justin will and won't play and it is simply impossible for Justin to deviate from that - even if he wanted to.

yep. it was pauls rick he was playing. justin used a stingray pre-tool. you know why? COS I ASKED HIM.

Who's arguing semantics? We were talking about Justin playing a Rick. I at least considered it a possibility (since his predecessor used one) but you said Justin never played one in public in his life. But now you're talking ownership? I have no idea what either of those guys own but then again I didn't have that all-important conversation with Justin that made you the infallible authority on him.
not about the rick thing, i will concede there, it was pauls. i didnt know about that gig, fair enough. but pre tool he used a stingray as he told me that himself when i met him in '01.

now we can argue semantics, that he's never played his OWN rick live as it was pauls.

in fact it was probably this rick....

I read somewhere that Paul used Mesa Boogie amps. I don't know if it was the 400+ or not.
I have a bootleg DVD from JC Dobbs club in Philadelphia 1992 (it's on YouTube) where Paul uses SWR cabs but I can't see what kind of head he used. He's got the Ovation Magnum at that show and it sounds KILLER.

what gear did Paul D'Amour use?
I KNOW ABOUT THE RIC, LET'S MOVE ON FROM TALKING ABOUT RICS!
i know it is the JC gear thread, but as he is most associated with playing w/ tool, i think it is a relevant question...

It's hard to tell by the video, but something makes me want to say it's a III.

I don't think it's a II, it's too large and round.

I've played a three before, it's nice, but I'd definitely take the two over it any day, despite how ugly it is. The two has a stereo output, and adjustable volume for each string and a switch for neck or bridge pickup or both with tone for both pickups, if I remember correctly. The III just had a separate volume and tone for either pickup.

wow. there was a lot of pissing and moaning in this thread.

you guys should apologize to one another.

it's not about who's 'toolier than thou'- it's about people pretending on the internet that they're some sort of authority. and that goes both for thinking you know what instruments a person plays and being the person who knows you can't know that for certain and just WON'T LET IT GO.

though i'm glad it only lasted a page and a half or so. if someone says something you don't agree with in a thread, just politely correct them and let it die. if they continue asserting something that isn't true [or merely that they couldn't know, which is most often the case] just let them. instead of clogging the internet with misinformation you're helping to clog it with annoying chronological bitching.

and yes, it IS annoying.

Nicely said.

Yes dad.
Uh ... aw shucks, sorry everybody!
