Justin Chancellor's Setup

He owns two Wal's, even three, I think.

I know he owns a fretless and he owns the standard Flame Maple fretted four string that you always see him using...Anyone else wanna confirm?

Yes, live he does. In the studio he used a March III for the harmonic whammy bits in Right in Two, and his back up fretted Wal for the song 10,000 Days. Based on the pic I have above, it looks like he has a red burst Wal too.

Is that a Rickenbacker he's playing in the pic?

He used the Stingray during the AEnima tour for Prison Sex, not 46+2. I've only seen a few vids from that tour but do remember seeing the Ray for Prison Sex.

rephrasing Wiki post:
1- Wal 4-string he bought on a friend’s recommendation during the recording of Ænima. The bass’s woods and electronics help create the midrange cut and punch for which he is known.
2- identical model to his main Wal, but with less midrange response (used on Wings for Marie parts one and two),
3- Wal Mach III with a greenburst finish (used for the harmonic sections in "Right in Two"),
4- lined fretless Wal with a walnut top (used in the second verse of "Lateralus," all of "intension" and parts of "Rosetta Stoned." ).

And enjoy all the antics, pretense, pure hatred, and general ass-haterry while you're there.
:scowl:

Yes it's gotten pretty bad, but good thing the info is already there and you shouldn't have to ask any questions...:rollno:

Anyway, Justin doesn't make sense sometimes. Why use the Stingray for such "drastically" different tunings? Drop B to D. Unless he just really preferred the Ray for 46&2.

Then again, I can't say much. I do a lot of things with my own music that don't make sense... :p

As far as his basses go. He also has a FRETTED Walnut topped Wal. He used it for Crawl Away (standard tuning) during the AEnima tour and then I believe he used it for Parabol/Parabola during the Lateralus tour.

The fretless was also used on Wings For Marie.

The fretless is used LIVE on Wings for Marie. His back up bass was used on WFM in the studio.

From that angle it looks like the bass has binding, a pick guard and Rick shape.
The binding might just be the wood laminations.

this really doesn't matter to me; casually throwing it out there... i am sure it is a Wal Mark II w/ a maple top, probably one of the two in the 1st two picks of this post (note the larger upper horn).
it has a black bridge, which ricks rarely have.
there isn't a pickguard that is visible (to my eyes).
you can see the neck laminates going through the headstock (which rics don't have).
as a topper, JC is a Wal player... there isn't anything about him owning a ric, especially playing one live.
if you still disagree, then i humbly agree to disagree.

No, you're right. It looked rick-ish at first from that angle. Yes, yes, of course JC is a Wal player, used on every Tool album since he joined, when recording Aenema the MM wasn't quite making it and so-and-so recommended the Wal, the rest is history, bla, bla <yawn>.

Now that's a funny thing to say. I'm half-expecting you to take off a glove and slap me with it!
So, Tooler-than-thou ...
Have you seen every public JC performance?
Did JC say this?
Are you JC?
If not, Never say never.
Its most certainly a wal, the man has never played a rick in public in his life!

wings 1+2 studio is fretted/fretless, live its all fretted. believe me, us tooltabbers have discussed it to death already!

I see. And all these eyewitnesses to every one of Justin Chancellor's public performances (inc. pre-Tool) have checked in with you? Man that's impressive. If I ever meet him I'll warn him to never play a Rick in public until he first clears it with you guys.
There have been enough eyewitnesses at various shows as well as audio confirmation/general info to know.

He hasn't used a Rick live, period.
