Looking good. The layers on the contours look great. I'd love to see what it looks like with some naptha or mineral spirits on it. Back loading it is definitely the right call.
I did a lot of sanding today and made myself a very simple but really helpful tool. I don't have access to a drum sander or even a Dremel style tool, so I found a little rolling pin toy from my kids play-doh kit and rolled my sandpaper around it, duct taped it and went to work! Here is my masterpiece.
I got tired of sanding and realized that this is my first build so there is no reason to strive for perfection, so I decided to put the first coat of finish on. I love it!
I haven't updated this in forever, so I thought I'd let you know what's going on. Shortly after the last update I was drilling the neck attachment holes and accidentally drilled one of them all the way through the neck. That, and some minor finishing issues were enough to make me lose excitement in this project. After stepping away from it for a long time (and learning how to solder) I have decided I will try to finish it. Progress will likely be slow though as I have a ton of work to do on my house this Spring and Summer. Cheers!
Quick question for you.... What made you choose to use an existing body and do all that work to it instead of just building a body from scratch? Seems like you have the skills, and it would be much easier to just start with a blank Block of wood, instead of patching/planing/gluing this existing body.
That's a good question. If I were to do it all over again, that's what I would do. Any skills that I have now, I really didn't have before starting this. I am pretty much fearless with tools and a quick learner, so I'm sure I will do this again. I think I just needed something to get me started, and that body did it for me. I like to take things that need a little love and make them nice.
Well, the skills you've learned are all good to have, and you'll use them in future builds !
And you're right, sometimes we need something to just get us a start....

The project is on hold at the moment. It might not get finished any time soon either. With 4 kids aged 7 and under, and a 105 year old house that seems to constantly need work done, I just don't have much free time. The little free time I do have, I'd rather spend playing bass.
Quick question: where do you get the G&L neck? I am about to start a project and need a (cheap) bolt on four string neck.

I've gone there many times and never seen any cheap necks (nor has the inventory seemed to have changed any time I've gone there, just a $400 lefty neck). Is there something I'm missing?
