Got that U-Bass. It's too much fun... sounds so standup-ish. I'm going to write some sort off review at some point, but the short of it is it's pretty game-changing in terms of accessing a whole new sound and ease of having it around you. It's like a teddy bear and an upright mated. I like the unplugged sound too, perfect for practicing around others. Plugged in it's legit. Playing wise it's fun and inventive. I've noticed my bass "vocabulary" is opening up allot just from a day or too with it. You can play all day and not feel it in your hands. Anyone suffering from hand issues should cry for joy this thing came out.
Pickup is great, strings are unique and it's fun to adapt and experiment with what you can do in this arena. I really wanted an Upright, but this made that go right away. Now I can keep my convertible and half my studio apartment. I love the simplicity. Pick it up and play and you have acoustic volume and a very nice tone. Plugged in, no knobs to tweak... and I did not feel the need to ever with enough dynamic range in my Hands. No Batteries (Thank God!) and you can leave it plugged in when not in use. Little things but that is what makes it such a simple pleasure to have around.
Got the Mahogany one, its solid top and I believe sides... think the spruce might be laminate. Can't wait for the strings to settle down and the top to break in a bit. Sounds better every day. Fretless could be a bad idea as the strings can be hard to slide on... or some lube and you'd fly. But there is no fret noise to consider with the poly strings.
Novel... Yes. But the sound is there. In the end, it's the sound coming out that I like most about this little guy.
