What does gimmick even mean, and what makes something a gimmick? or is it the same meaning as unique, or innovative?
I enjoy bass and the community because there are so many unique options for everyone. 4-string, 5-string, 6-string, solid body, hollowbody, short scale, medium scale, long scale, ukulele bass, roundwounds, flatwounds, tapewounds, tapeRwounds, polyurethane strings, drop-tuning and other alternate tunings, violin basses, p-bass, j-bass, active bass, passive bass, lefty bass, fingerstyle, picking, slapping and popping, fanned fret, fretless, acoustic, electric, acoustic-electric, upright bass, bass VI, headless travel bass, budget basses, boutique basses...etc etc. And within each of these options there are lots of choices!
I like some of these things, and I'm not a fan of others, but I respect everyone's unique style and choices.
And opinion makes something a gimmick... and we all seem to have them. And that's allegedly okay. Just saying.

Oh, I was not trying to justify it. I was making sure that it is actually playable. I tried to play real world things instead of just noodling and jamming because a lot of basses are fun the store , but are miserable at rehearsal or the service.
How did that cool looking gig where you had your Fodera go?
I picked up the U-bass today. I will see how much I end up playing it when I am not traveling. I will post pictures later.
Not good... but fortunately the one the next night was insane. Completely made up for the other one.
The first gig started with someone yelling out to play a jazz version of "Freebird". So the very first song was a traditional rendition of "Freebird".
The gig was a funk/R&B/jazz type thing. So that song went over like a ton of bricks. Just to amuse one person.
The next song was "Under the Boardwalk".
And so on. For the life of me I don't get why, ith the thousands of songs we had to choose from, we end up doing nonsense like that? As close to work as a gig gets for me. But I grinned and beared it. The next night was a party at a private residence with a trio I used to work with. Because it was a trio there was a lot of freedom. A ton of freedom. We reharmed and reconstructed a bunch of cool songs, everything was "our" version. In short, we got to play
. I wish more of my gigs were like that.

Teaching is like that, one class may be dead, the next one just comes to life!
Here I am playing the bassline from the verse of "Sanctuary" by Kurt Carr. The song constantly modulates higher, I missed a step somewhere. I think this deep tone will work in church. I think I sound more like a standard bass guitar than most I hear playing one on YouTube. Those guys sound more like a double bass.

Your going to love it at Church! You'll probably get some funny looks at first, but once they hear it their mouths will drop open and they will be in shock! I used to like to start off with a full size bass, then switch to the Ubass and watch peoples reaction! Enjoy and let us know how it goes!
I can't get your video to play. Also, When shooting video, always turn your phone sideways so when posting the video, it will fill the full size of the window, shooting upright like you did only fills 1/3 the window.
I meant to put in that position so it would just show me, and not the whole room which is a bit junky.

I played the U-bass for children's choir, and I was really impressed. This little bass comes to life in a big room! It really captures a double bass vibe.
I ended up returning the same UBASS that @DrCheese has there because I got a ton of body noise from just touching the body. I tried 2 different basses, and eneded up getting this for $149. Just got it today, so haven't had a chance to plug her in yet. The fit and finish is nice and the strings aren't sticky.

I have that one Cheese (W/built in pre). Its a great little bass with really nice tone. I even gigged it a few times at church. It did a great job!

I figured once you got it and plugged it in you would be hooked, lol! I play mine almost exclusively on my rotation to play in the church band. They only want me to use my Exotic Mahogany like yours and my 5 strong fretless Cali one. They are now trying to talk the other bassist to get one as well.
I enjoy all my bases, but the uke basses are the most fun.

They are fun. I still enjoy the larger size and tone of standard bass guitars, but the U-bass is a really cool alternative!
