It actualy takes a lot more effort than with a regular bass to bend a string. Was toying with bending them last night. How do people come up with these warnings?

It actualy takes a lot more effort than with a regular bass to bend a string. Was toying with bending them last night. How do people come up with these warnings?
It still bugs me that many bass players don't know the difference between tension and stiffness - they conflate the two constantly.

I just got a fretted mahogany UBass and I love it. I think it sounds great for Latin-sounding stuff. Here's a little goof- around mp3 I made called "Oy Vey Como Va"
. The Ubass was recorded through a Sansamp RBI, direct. Fat sound from an itty bitty bass!

well I'm still probably gonnna get one... But my question is can i plug it in as is and it will sound good.. or do i need a preamp?
Every kale bass that I've heard sound really good is using a preamp...
Is this necessary ?
Also acoustically how much can you hear it without an amp?
I was thinking of getting the fretless version whats difference with fretted?

Difference between fretted and fretless? Anyway... you don't necessarily need a preamp. I play mine plugged straight into my rig and it sounds great.
Good to hear, Matt.I got my 2 sets of replacement strings (from Italy, mind you) in 3 days. Wow.
I just strung the bass up and these strings are way more stable and sound great. I'll let them settle a while and get back to you all.
Party ain't over yet. There's still a little left in the keg.
I'm interested in how they were installed without stretching AND keeping minimum winds around the tuning posts.
I also have to wonder why Kala don't offer the Aquila 'Thundergut' bass strings as an option on their website, although all Kala ukuleles are shipped with Aquila strings as standard.

I guess you mean "Oi véio, como vai?"
No. Aquila strings are not standard on Kala U basses. They use their proprietary Pahoehoe strings. These Aquila thunderguts are a new product.
Correct (i.e. I know that). I was wondering why the Thundergut (they gotta change that name) strings aren't offered by Kala.
Can you tell us a little bit about the installation of the strings please, Matt? How were you able to get them up to pitch without stretching and without ending up with a lot of winds around the tuning posts?
Gotcha. Well, it was just trial and error really. I did have to end up stretching the strings around the posts somewhat to get the right amount of windings. I just had to do it 2 or 3 times on the D & G strings. Kind of hard to explain without seeing it but it's not that hard.
Like sticking in the nut slot? My A string likes to do that. I filed the slot a hair and it helped. Also, the Aquila strings aren't quite so rubbery so that helps too.
