Kala UBass Megathread, Part 3

1. No. You will focus more on actually playing, rather knob tweaking.

2. Yes. Because it IS acoustic instrument, where the solid body is not.

3. I adjusted in 3 days from my short-scale Gretsch. If *I* can adjust, then, welll...

After watching the Pyramid video, I could see those being better for a solid body player wanting more of a slab bass guitar tone. I'm not completely sold on them on the acoustic, but maybe I'll give 'em a try someday.

I JUST picked up a Mahogany Ubass and I made a slight error while installing new strings(the bass is mint but used). The pickup wire was slightly crimped when I openned the cavity but I thought nothing of it. However I caught it while installing the strings and snapped the wire inside. Any of you guys ever need to get a replacement pickup from Kala? Its so disappointing as I just bought the bass and I can't plug it in!!

What he said. I agree with Chad.

Look at Watsontbass channel on YouTube. I try to outline all those issues in depth. Check out the descriptions and comments.

Thanks Tim! I just listened to your whole YouTube channel on repeat 3 times in a row. It really helped to hear the differences between the solid body and acoustic U-Basses.

Also, awesome playing!

They sent me a replacement bridge/pickup/jack on suspicion that mine was defective. I got it in like 2 days and problem solved. It was easy to drop it in myself.

Played my first Ubass-only jazz gig in a piano trio yesterday...left the EUB at home. Upscale setting...wow, what a reception. I'm really getting big-time jazz snobs to flop out over this little monster. The drummer swore he could close his eyes and it was the best bass tone he's heard...and he's very "traditional." I'm getting a "dub-upright" sound now that I'm pretty addicted to...starting to build up more solo speed too, not that I'm a Jacob-type or anything. Tim...keep meaning to record something but I just keep forgetting!

I practiced on the U-Bass tonight using the Fishman Pro-EQ. I am using the Tombao suggested settings, with the gain backed off until the clip light doesn't blink. It gave the U-Bass a fantastic sound and no piezo cluck.

The Fishman's a pretty cost-effective little unit. My only complaint is that I wish it was shaped differently...I sorta hang it forward from the top handle of my Genz-Benz Shuttle. I don't want it on my pedalboard. I do use it for just about everything these days. I have tons of eq's, effects, etc., and usually switch configurations monthly. This thing has managed to make it to all of my shows for the last year...and I wouldn't gig the Ubass without it.

In the absence of experience, I read the manual and it consistently mentioned maxing this or that setting, then dialing it back until the clipping light stopped blinking. It does the trick very well. Tim, I don't think you will be disappointed. Try the various suggested settings near the back of the manual as a start.

I called Kala and got my pickup situation figured out. I should have a new pickup/jack assembly soon! Great customer service! I am glad as well since this particular Ubass is the best sounding one I have played(I owned another fretted Mahogany a while ago). Ordered a set of Aquila Thunderguts too so I should be all set in a week or so. Thanks to you guys for making me spend more ;)
