Kala UBass Megathread, Part 3

Just for info to those who may be considering the Aquila Thundergut strings on their Ubass; I received mine Monday 4/23/12 and puth them on. I like the tone and the extra tension, but the last two evenings when I got the Ubass out to play the strings were STICKY. Apparently my skin oil breaks down the material from which the strings are made. Wiping witha dry cloth or damp cloth does no good at all. Baby powder on the strings is all I've found that helps. I'm guessing it will get worse....
I find my TG's get a little sticky from time to time, but I think it has more to do with the weather. Some days they're a little sticky, and some days they're a little (as Bear Grylls would say) slippy.
Do they physically look like they're breaking down? When mine feel sticky, licking my fingertips helps... boy, does that sound dirty.

I do have a lot of fun with my TG equipped Ubass, and I get great tone from it, too. I don't know why those that don't like the TG's are such jerks about it to everyone who's playing them. You spent $20 on strings and didn't like them... Oh no.

I don't see any jerks. You would think we where talking about religion here. I think people are getting upset as soon as there is a different opinion. Its being personalised when tastes differ. And it seems to come from the people who are satisfied. I had someone pm me that I was doing a disservice with my Thundergut review. Its just strings guys. I do think its important that there is as much info as possible to read through. Where is the argument?
I haven't noticed any jerk attitude. I played the U bass last evening for about an hour. The sticky got worse and more widespread (all strings & over a greater length of the string).
I posted the info for those who don't care for sticky strings. If I get something sticky on my hand or strings during a gig, I'll call for a break and get it off. I can't deal with it for any length of time. If providing info and experience with a product to others on this forum is being a jerk, put me on the list with a capital"J".
I´ve finded the same sticky feeling on my thunderguts, specially were the right hand pulls them...

I have a set of Thunderguts that I am going to try. My question is this - if I try them and find that they are not working for me, will I be able to restring the current (original) strings or are they pretty much done once you remove them? Have seen some info about the original strings shrinking quite a bit when you remove them......not sure if its possible to restring with them.

Thx - just want to make sure I have both options, depending on which works out best for me....
They will shrink a lot, but you can re-stretch them and start the tune up process all over again..... It's not quite as bad as starting with new strings, but they do change a great deal from relaxed to tuned-up.

I meant that most of the TG haters really bashed the hell out of them, calling them a waste of money and trying to get everyone and their mother to NOT buy them it seems.
Anyway, whatever, different opinions, yadda yadda...
My spruce bass has a pretty dry board. Some fingerboard conditioner will fix it right up. A lot of people will tell you not to use lemon oil as it actually can dry the wood out more in the long run.

all of my basses are natural woods; most are fretless; I use Howard's Feed & Wax on all of them....bodies and boards

does it, or is that just "TG-hate on lemon oil"? ^^
my big bass has been enjoying lemon oil all its life, and still looks alive (admittedly it´s not that old, but you got the point) .. in fact better than most other fingerboards i´ve seen
