Kala UBass Megathread, Part 3

Ok... After I fiddled with 2 preamps today in a nutshell for all of you who are trying to decide:

The Baggs has a punchy, tight, almost hi-fi very clear sound. The low end is tight, like I said, but very strong. It took me some drastic knob turning but I got a fantastic sound. it is the sound of the instrument you plug into it with problem areas fixed.

The Fishman seems to have a baked in curve that gives us a head start on the typical problem frequencies in the high mids. Minimal tone control moving got me the tone I like. The lows were not as strong inherently, but easy to add. I still did not find a setting on the depth control that tightened the lows up as well as the Baggs while still keeping them strong. I also noticed that tweaking things would affect others. The EQ, depth, and compression all affected the Gain and output. I would describe the tone as woody in comparison to the hi-fi-ness of the Baggs. The lower mids really were very warm, and I would say this box really altered the natural instrument's tone to be more smooth and wooly. That can be a good thing if that is what you like.

After all this fun I decided to bring in the third wheel, the VT pedal. Remember, I am going into the effects return of my amp and using this old school 2x15 can with jensens, which are warm, but bumped in the upper mids.

Set how I always have it at gigs, it had more drive and more buzz than I'm used to from it. It was hard to EQ out the finger noise while having any drive dialed in. I like the drive on here because it seems to make the lows more wide and add subtle compression and warm almost subharmonic qualities to lower notes. It gives just enough PFFT on the attacks to give great thump. Boosting the lows seemed to make it too woofy and I preferred to keep that knob flat all the time. Cutting highs even all the way still did not EQ out finger noise enough. It seemed like a frequency curve and not a shelving-type knob. As if it is dealing with 5k, but there is still stuff above that you can't control. The mid and character controls seemed to make a lot of difference but are so sensitive that you gotta find the right place and adjust around it since they are interactive.

I have used this pedal live very extensively. I was a little perplexed at how much I was fiddling with it to get great ubass tone. It dawned on me: when you EQ you tone AFTER this pedal so that your bypassed sound is already good, this will improve it and give another sound option. It has made the ubass and the upright bearable and sound good through crappy backlines and PA's. And it REALLY shines with my Stingrays and P-bass. Again, it is best when the bypassed tone is already good. Probably adding upper harmonics with the drive need to be smoothed out with the clean highs too. I hope this all makes sense. More testing will be needed.

I have been trying to hate the Fishman because that name makes me think of that God awful upright pickup and I think the unit is ugly and plastic. I wish it were built like, and looked like, a MXR pedal. But it seems to be emerging as my favorite preamp once I have time to set it. With my EQ-after-the-VT theory, maybe it should be after the VT in my chain... Preamps before the VT seem to mess with the VT's sensitive gain. I have a gig this weekend with a lot of upright. I'll put it to the test on that and get back.

I just happen to have all 3 of those preamps already. jamesczar, if you want to borrow a VT pedal before making the decision of buying one for yourself, you can borrow mine. It just sits on a shelf since I got the VT deluxe. Just let me know...

Thanks for the ebay help guys! Setup of these things seem to be the #1 issue.

Thanks for the offer, Wes! I think I'm gonna take you up on that... I'll PM you.

Also, check Link Removed, out of Indiana (they're on eBay or you can contact the shop directly). That's where I ended up getting my 'hog fretless, because they weren't in stock at Sweetwater (or several other places) - all said they were on backorder for several months. Then one popped up on Roxy. (If you contact them, tell them I sent ya.)

I keep certain Saved Searches going on My eBay set to alert me when new stuff gets listed, and I had a search for the mahogany fretless UBass going, and blam! So I went to grab one (which had the exotic top) and missed it. I contacted Roxy directly to say if that buyer didn't follow through I'd take it. They replied and said they had another one they were about to list and they'd give it to me for a deal if I bought it right then - so I snatched it up. I couldn't be happier!

James - nice music on your website! I'll have to stop by one of the shows and check out the tunes. Are you playing the Kala in any of the shows yet or do you play a DB? Tim's in the Cincy area too, and with Wes this thread is starting to look like an OH bassist club. Keep up the great playing and when you get a chance post some vids or songs with you on the Ubass.

Of course, last night I put a set of Thunderguts on my solid body by leaving the knot poking out the back, as bad andy illustrated, and today Kala has the new ones on their website. All ready for solid body models, end caps installed.

I do like the sound, feel, and stability of these strings, but I got a bum G string in my set. It looks like a sine wave: regularly repeating variation of string diameter along the whole length of the string. Kala is taking care of it, but anyone else ever get one like this? Sounds like crap, like a chorus effect with bad harmonic content.

Unfortunately, all string makers will have bum strings. These are kind of a new thing. Fortunately, both Mimmo and Kala seem to be good about making things right. I have had needed both Aquila and Kala to fix CS problems and thy both have passed with flying colors.

While I don't think I had any bum strings in my TG sets, there is definitely more upper harmonic activity in those strings. I have heard other reports about a chorus effect on this thread. I did not have that effect personally, but I did have more upper mids and sustain that did not suit my style or tone goals. I would imagine, though, that had I decided to continue owning a fretted solid body, it would have white strings on it.

OK I also had a big fiddle with the pre-amps today too. (Fishman Pro-eq Platinum Bass and LR Baggs paracoustic pre-di), andheres what I found.

I played through my SWR Baby Baby Blue. This is a great little amp but even with its semi-parametric eq I couldn't tame that string noise. I set both pre-amps flat to begin with and adjusted to taste.

I found that upping the input gain on both pre-amps helped with the string noise and sound quality significantly. Gain on the fishman was at 2o'clock and on the baggs around the 3o'clock.

The input compression and depth on the fishman were at about 9 o'clock and sounded fine. Once the input was fixed I could up the bass, low mid and mid was just above neutral. Hi mid was just below neutral and treble right next to it. This gave me the best sound. The fishman eliminated more string noise from than the baggs or the amp could by itself.

The settings of the baggs were remarkably similar. However what I did notice was that the Baggs sounded more open and musical, particularly brought the E string to life compared to amp or the fishman - not that I noticed this in the fishman until I went back to it to compare.

I have to say I've owned a lot of these pre-di boxes too many to list here. After years of searching I naturally lean towards the more transparent boxes - hence why I have these two. I've used the baggs for 18 months or more and loved it for my 6 string bass it was curiosity that led me to buy a fishman. I found the fishman to be extremely similar yet it was a bit warmer, woolier not quite as crystal clear. After using the fishman several times I put it away. It wasnt unitil I did that I realised that the fishman sat better in the mix with the acoustic group I play with. So while the baggs won the "playing by yourself" A/B test I'm not calling this one till I've played with both with the group. I put the baggs away 3 months ago and have been loving the fishman. I've only kept the baggs for the rare times I use my acoustic guitar for something. Glad I did keep it, may come in handy for the kala. Either way first few times I play I'll be taking both pedals and my 6 string bass and my kala to do some comparisons. Hopefully in a few weeks I can report back.

Loving my kala hog by the way. Have also sent a few e-mails to Owen at roadtoad in regards to a 5 string 24 scale version.

Thank you for the reviews everybody, but.........does the LR Baggs model or the Fishman have to be placed on a cabinet nearby during the gig or on the floor somewhere, and you set it up once only for the duration of the evening, or does the preamp clip on your belt?

They are both a little too big to "clip on".

Fishman does make the BII preamp (bass & treble eq only) that does work as a "clip on", though. It even has the clip. Works great with the U-Bass, but is not a di (no xlr out). I used one on the last Taylor Swift tour (with an opening act). Walked out with nothing but my U-Bass strapped on & the Fishman BII clipped to my belt. Fastest set change ever!

I keep the BII in my U-Bass case just as a backup, or if I find myself needing to just plug into an amp. The Platimun Pro DI is a huge improvement with the additional eq, but the BII certainly matches well with the instrument!

I emailed Kala asking about the possibility of a cheap fretless model with a cut away body for better fret access.

I was told to keep my eye out for a fretless SUB, as that is most likely the next model they will introduce.

Both are very heavy and a little too big. Both units really do need to e set and forgotten. The Baggs had small knobs that are hard to see and the Fishman is very interactive. If you change something you have to compensate in the gain or volume and it is really impractical to be tweaking a lot. I would probably have it on top of the amp for emergency tweaking access.

Hey UBass Brothers and Sisters,

Don't let scotch/Justin's links slip on by.

He is part of the Sixpence None The Richer next chapter, and you should be checking it out and supporting it:

Awww.... You guys will probably dig my surf/punk-rock band, Crazy Aces more. Were getting ready to cut a record this summer. All original instrumentals. No U-Bass, alas... :-(

Fortunately for me the form of worship music I play is music which is all quite similar so I don't need to do a lot of eq adjustments between songs, I've never been a serial tweeker either. You could quite easily sit either unit on your amp for ease of tweekability or sit it on the floor, but like everyone else has said you can't really belt clip these on. There is a BII and there used to be a Sadowsky one (vol bass treble - once again no di) that might work. Actually I do wonder how a sadowsky pre-di would work on one of these?

My one wish was that one of the two (baggs/fishman) had a mute switch as the kala needs lots of re-tunning. Please tell me this will fix itself after a week or so? I know there is a baggs (next model up) which does this with a built in tuner but I prefer to run off of phantom power and it doesn't do that.

A volume or mute switch on the kala would be ever so handy too. I do suppose kala have thought of this and dismissed it though. Surely the extra few $ in components and time to fit it wouldn't be that much?

It takes weeks for the Pahoehoe (black) strings to really settle in. They will stretch less after that. Be sure to not let the windings reach the bottom of the post - the posts can break. You'll likely have to rewind & trim them soon.

Tell me about it! I'm using a Planet Waves "Circuit Breaker" cable with my U-Bass. That & their NS-Mini tuner. Works great!
