Kala UBass Megathread, Part 3

The fretless hog KILLS Motown ran through a properly set VT Bass pedal. I have it kicked in on all Tunes that would otherwise be a P-bass.

I have found that the Fishman and the Baggs are different and it really depends on the instrument and the room.

True dat. I would use my P-Bass in a Motown band. Especially if the check signer wants that.

James, take it from me, a tone NAZI, your sound was great. It fit in perfectly with that group. And sounded great on its own.

I just ordered an F-Deck piezo buffer. I am really wondering what the actual impedance of these passive pups is. Many of the newer amps and pedals these days have 1megOhm inputs. They seem to work fine. All our little preamps designed for piezo instruments (like the Baggs, Fishman, Radial, etc.) have 10megOhm inputs. And across the board, to my ears, even set flat they have a more solid and tight low end. In my research, that is where the matching piezo impedance makes the most difference. So the F-deck does the piezo buffer thing, has a high pass filter (35-140hz), and a phase switch. No compression or EQ. Just more pedal and gear possibilities without the always-on processing of our favorite preamps. Example:Fdeck straight into the MXR EQ. Or into the VT (better low end coming in). Or into the Eden or older ampegs or any other device no optimized for high impedance. I will report back soon.

So far I'm still locked in on the VT pedal with my fretted HOG Ubass. Always willing to try new things though. I've been down the Fishman Plat. route and found it wasn't for me but this thing has sparked a little interest... [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]
Anyone here ever try one with a Ubass hollowbody? I think they are actually designed with guitar in mind so not sure if it will work well with the HOG. It does have the phase switch and is clip on with simple controls, both a plus in my book.

Ok, playing a block party tomorrow. I'm doing sound, so I'll have a chance to set everything up the way I want in a live environment. A chance to test the AI Ten 2 in live setup, and a chance to try out the VT Bass pedal that Wes let me borrow. Even though this is a bluegrass band, there are a few tunes that I wanna try the VT on... Like our bluegrass cover of Iggy Pop's "I Wanna Be your Dog." It gets pretty rockin at the end.

I'll report back on the front porch pickin and grinnin!

It looks to be in the same vein as the lr baggs and the fishman pro-eq bass, just a trimmed down version. If it does belt clip it would indeed give you ready access to volume and tone controls. Hope someone can report back on it.

I've used the K&K. Great on acoutic guitar! A little too big to clip on your body, in my opinion. The eq frequency centwrs are very high for bass too. The treble control is virtually pointless for us. The mids cut in a good spot though. I like to see somewhere between 40-80 hz for bass, 100 is a little high (but it does shelve).

Last night, our lighting crew kept using black lights for the set breaks and I thought it made the SUB with TGs really pop on stage. Too bad they didn't use these lights more during the set.

After gigging with the TGs, I'm comfortable saying they outperform the stock strings in every way on the fretted SUB, with the exception of the stickiness everyone has mentioned. Not a big deal on most tunes, it's a small issue on fast runs and slides.

I guess, I'll break down and try the baby-powder trick. :hmm: Otherwise, I'm still enjoying this setup very much. Getting lots of comments and enjoying not having a stiff shoulder the day after 4+ set gigs.

Any comments or tips from the other TG users are welcome.

Way to go. Yeah, those strings look awesome. Even without black lights, under our colored lights, the TG's on mine look great.

Break down and try some powder. Little sprinkle on the hands, then run your hands up and down the strings. You'll stop thinking about tackiness. Works great.
