Kala UBass Megathread, Part 4

Hello UBassists,

I definitely plan to order a solid body UBass! I've listened to lots of enticing YouTube clips, and I'm ready to make a purchase. I'd like to hear from you all about the differences between Kala's California solid body and their S-U-B solid body. There is a price difference; how about any differences in quality of parts and workmanship?

I'd appreciate any feedback and advice. I already play short scale electric basses, so adjusting to the UBass shouldn't be too hard.

What has your experience been, with Kala's solid body UBasses?

Hi, haven't been following for a while...wanted to check back in on the latest with strings for the Kalas. I have a fretted mahogany ubass, and I am wanting to move more towards a bass guitar sound with it. Is it still basically a choice between the stock strings and the Aquilas or have other afternarket strings emerged?

If you seach back far enough there are aftermarket steel strings, I forget who makes them. They were pretty pricey though.

I also think that Magnus and Tim are the only ones on the net who are able to present the U-Bass in it's real glory.

On all the other YouTube videos (the ones with Abe Laboriel, Tal Wilkenfeld and other stars included!) the U-Bass simply doesn't sound good. It comes across just as a gimmick.

But when it comes to selling and promoting, I think such a video is also good:

It was a gift originally so I figured there was no harm in selling it. 3 "real" basses later and I still missed it. I came across a good deal on the hog, which I always coveted, and now shes hopefully on her way. I'll just take off the accursed sticky thunder guts she's strung with and start the pahoehoehoehoe stretching process from scratch all over again.

I have only tried the SUB (there are some YouTube-clips on my channel YouTube.com/bassmagics

Saw the FF on the email from Kala today and ordered it. And Kala finally got a tweed hard case in, so I ordered that too. Ordered this morning, both shipped this afternoon. Pics when I get them!

I've been waiting a while for that tweed case... the semi-hard case that came with the 'hog was almost dead... I was about to tear it apart and rebuild it, but that can wait now.

I'm glad I'll have the new hard case for our upcoming NYC trip... I don't like to be on the road without a strong case... I was considering building a temporary one out of one of my spare pelican cases, even if it was going to be too big.

By the way, if any of you NYC UBassers are interested, my bluegrass/Americana group, Link Removed, will be at Paddy Reilly's Music Bar in Manhattan (Kips Bay) on Friday, Nov 9 and at the Sycamore Bar in the Ditmas Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, on Saturday, Nov 10. We'll likely have a few more shows while there, but that's all we have scheduled at the moment. Come on out, I'd love to meet you in person. And bring friends! :)

Stepped out of this thread again for while, but need to return....

Got my new BP magazine in the mail yesterday. They reviewed the sub (could have sworn they already did that a while back), and I quickly skimmed it. I noticed they said it requires a 60 second charge through the preamp's proprietary adapter, and is then good to go for up to 8 hours.

?????????????????????????

I haven't used my sub all that much. Did some recording with it, took it to the studio once or twice. I never read anything about charging it, never had to charge it, and havent a clue what a proprietary adaptor is.

Are they making them differently from last year?

Did they make a mistake?

Or am I totaly in the dark about a bass I bought, which I'm pretty sure I've played for more than 8 hours?
