Kala UBass Megathread, Part 4

Hey all. Here is a pic of the mahogany body roughly cut for my custom. A little more shaping will be done. And The other thing is a custom built F-Deck made up to be installed directly into the bass. I liked the sound of my Hog with the F-Deck Series 2 more than my Cali with its internal electronics. So I'm putting the F-deck straight into this bass.

I forgot what type of body design you're doing. Are you going to route out that body any?

The lower horn will be shaped up a little, but that is the gist of the body shape. It will be routed out a ton. A very chambered solid body, technically speaking. It'll have a very figured top. I'll rout something on the upper bout, maybe an F-Hole or something to make it appear more acoustic.

I've been waiting a while for that tweed case... the semi-hard case that came with the 'hog was almost dead... I was about to tear it apart and rebuild it, but that can wait now.

I'm glad I'll have the new hard case for our upcoming NYC trip... I don't like to be on the road without a strong case... I was considering building a temporary one out of one of my spare pelican cases, even if it was going to be too big.

By the way, if any of you NYC UBassers are interested, my bluegrass/Americana group, Link Removed, will be at Paddy Reilly's Music Bar in Manhattan (Kips Bay) on Friday, Nov 9 and at the Sycamore Bar in the Ditmas Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, on Saturday, Nov 10. We'll likely have a few more shows while there, but that's all we have scheduled at the moment. Come on out, I'd love to meet you in person. And bring friends! :)

Thank you for your kind message! I've been reading your web site and blog, and enjoying your UBass videos. I especially have had "Nostalgia In Times Square" replaying in my thoughts - you really make some swinging music with your UBass!!

It seems like you prefer your hollow body UBass, to the SUB. Is that so? The two basses seem to have somewhat different sounds.

I've been seriously thinking about buying a four string, fretted solid body. I still don't know what to think about choosing the SUB or the California model. Are you happy with your SUB? Do you have any complaints or things you don't care for, with the SUB?

I haven't used my sub all that much. Did some recording with it, took it to the studio once or twice. I never read anything about charging it, never had to charge it, and havent a clue what a proprietary adaptor is.

Thanks for the heads up about BP's UBass review. I hadn't spotted that yet. How do you like your SUB UBass? I'm very interested in any feedback or suggestions you might have, as I'm considering buying either a SUB or a California solid body.

What lead you to choose the SUB? Are you happy with your purchase?

Been a while since I visited this thread. Still playing my fretted hog but looking for the next generation of unfretted basses from Kala or Roadtoad. Seems like they are constantly upgrading them, which is always a great thing. Anyway, ran across this clip on youtube which is a great example of the fretted Ubass in action. Still love mine, just wish I had more time to play it.

I'm buying a kala u bass as a gift for my boyfriend and I wanted to change the strings on it because I've been reading in this thread that there are better alternatives to the stock strings. What is the difference in sound/playability/tuning stability between the Thunderguts, Pahoehoes, and Silver Rumblers? Any preferences? Thanks!

The Pahoehoes are vastly different than the Thunderguts and the Silver Rumblers.

The Pahoehoes are essentially a rubber. They sound very good, but they stretch and stretch and stretch. And stretch. They don't reach stability for a Long, Long time. The Thunderguts and Silver Rumblers are essentially a variant of a nylon. They offer awesome tone, while reaching stability in days instead of many weeks.

Having said all that:
1. You Rock for buying your boyfriend a UBass. :)
2. If he knows what's good for him, he'll keep you. :)
3. He will have plenty of fun exploring the bass with the stock strings. You might want to leave the string experimentation to him, because it's a very subjective situation.

Please tell us how it all goes.
