Very immediate response. Maybe even more defined attacks than with the Thunderguts on my fretless hog.

Only reservation of mine from seeing the video: The socket for the cable plug isn’t well placed for somebody playing seated exclusively.

Any ideas about what the price of the Jo bass is?

Hey. I was just playing my hog in front of th tv and wanted more volume so I plugged into this Dan electro honey tone amp I have. The soun d through the speaker is not good but with earbuds plugged into the amp it sounds great. A little more treble than through an amp or acoustically but a very worthy tone for practicing and you can hear all the good things and flaws in your playing. Also works really well
This way for electric bass. And.....just 20$!

Question - Has anyone ever had the frets removed from a UBass and have thoughts about the result that they can share? I have a spruce with frets and am always getting buzz. It would seem that removing the frets could make it more friendly and approachable. Thanks.

Yup. I defretted my spruce and like it even more now! Look back a page or two for pics.

It took me a couple of hours, but I have experience and tools on hand. All you really need are a couple of sharp chisels, sandpaper, a radiused block, some good 220 and 400 grit sandpaper, ca glue and whatever fill material you want to use for the slots. Plastic or wood do just fine! I caution against epoxy or wood filler as they could chip out over time since the rosewood board will not likely be sealed. A pair of fret pullers can make the job go faster too, but the chisels are key for a chip-free job!

Given 2 hours of bench time and materials (lets say wood veneer in the slots), about 100 or a little less would be reasonable.

Agfrag thank you for all the info. Love the upright bass you've built! In terms of the strings how did you get the longer scale sizes of brushcutter nylon???
From a brushcutter shop or from a string manufacturer?

On 21-12-'12 I received my Hog in South Africa. Not sure if it is the first one? I have seen a spruce model here, but that's about it.
On the "sausaging" of the TG strings, my experience is, that I over stretched the E string and it did not recover to its old shape. I wrongly assumed that they needed similar pre-stretching as the PaHoHo strings. I opened another set and was less vigorous, and the E string is settling in nicely. The TG strings are easier to put on when compared to the PHH strings.

Somewhere on the web, likely within the 5 megathreads, I have seen a presentation of an Australian maker’s tiny upright bass based on the Pahoehoe strings. Searches with Australia and Pahoehoe as criteriae gave a lot of volcanic references. So I added strings as a criteria, but I didn’t get a result.

Some of you are likely to do smarter searches than me. Please tell.

No, it was about a shrunk upright, shapewise. But this cello idea is fun also. VERY briefly considered putting UBass strings on my reasonably decent viola, but as I have no fireplace, what would I do with the kindling?

Of all the cool alternative ubass string uses, I want this:
I have that bass. Apparently this is a protoype set. I can't tell what's going on with the tuners and how the strings fit.
I think they could sorta fit through the bridge pins.

@3234718 I've seen that Ibanez adapted as a Bass Guitar with TGs on YT. The info on the quoted YT clip () about the Belcat pick up I will follow up, as I've been given a broken chinese guitar (head stock broke off). My next step is to find another broken guitar with a slotted headstock that I can use for a Bass conversion a la YEELABERBIN. Collecting these bits and bobs is what takes time.
