I played a california 5 string and a lh1000 amp through a full stack at the Sam Ash, and I didn't notice much difference with a regular size bass's volume. The quality of the sound was of course different.

I have an older passive one, without the onboard preamp, and there is a ton of output and low end. It has more output than my passive or active basses.
Unfortunately this thread has too many stories of weak output and unbalanced strings. Many of the QC problems stem from the pickup and its fit in the bridge.
I would try another one if you can, and if it's a preamp model, rule out a weak battery. It should compare to or be hotter to an average P-Bass. When I double with the U-Bass, I have to turn up the other bass every time. Good luck!

I bet it would sound great with aquila's revolutionary new thunder reds. Unfortunately they seem to be a myth despite this photographic evidence.

Just tried the U Bass again, and made sure I didn't misread the preamp. Same thing. Volume had to go all the way up in the amp I used to get any decent level out of it. And it started shrieking when I bumped the plug.
Yeah Jimmy, I have one without the preamp and its pretty hot going to the amp. Probably a bit louder than my Longhorn. It sounds like the preamp battery may be almost dead. Is there any way you could toss in a new battery and try it? You may want to consider finding one without the preamp and run it through an f-deck high pass filter. You won't believe how great that will sound! I too have read many of your posts and judging by what you play now, you will probably love having a u-bass in your arsenal!
The f-deck high pass filter is mentioned again and again. Sadly it only is sold in the US. I recognize the hazards of international distribution for a 1-man company run on the side of a day job plus extensive musical activities.
So my question is:
What is the internationally marketed alternative?
Chording instruments may emit low frequencies lower that those emitted by their lowest string, if the chord pattern creates difference notes.
Not a big issue with a mostly linear instrument like the UBass.
Neither a big issue with my chord playing on ukuleles and retuned/reentrant guitars, where I strive for complexity with ideally at least two notes added to the notes of the triad (mostly the 5th is omitted on the ukes).
My problem is low frequency attack noise.
Ideally I would want a linear (non roll-off) cut-off moveable from 30Hz through 250Hz.
Any ideas within a reasonable price frame?

It is fretless. Not nearly as hard as I thought. I find it pleasant to play without "speed-bumps".

Just discovered the existance of this bass, and I have looked thru much of the 6 mega-threads, but perhaps someone can give me the lowdown as Im thinking to pick up a pre-owned fretted solidbody
1)is there much audible difference between the SUB and the USA made (im guessing the main difference is the preamp). I realize this is highly subjective. Mainly stage use.
2)what kind of lifespan should one expect for the black strings and what should i expect tp pay for a new 4-set?
3)any other build issues especially if it looks like the offshore SUB is going to be the likely budget candidate?
